I just love going to the local walmart and making rude remarks about all the fat people, thin people, Black people, white people, Latino people, Asian people, gay people, non-gay people, transgendered people, non transgendered people, poor people, rich people, left handed people, right handed people, people who drive, people who don't drive, and thus on and thus on.
It makes me feel so good! I am soooooo much better than they and I want them to know it!!

Edited on Fri Sep-04-09 02:56 PM by WildEyedLiberal
Can you imagine if there was a site dedicated to mocking "ghetto trash" wearing big baggy oversized T-shirts or "bling" or who were sporting a "grill" or nice sneakers in some inner city food mart?

I can HEAR the wails of (justified) outrage now. But it's just hi-fuckin-larious when it's poor white people in Wal-Mart.

And before someone comments - yes, I noticed that there are a few pictures of non-white people on this site. But those aren't the pictures that DU finds so fucking hysterical and everyone knows it.

But since it's "Haha, look at this fat lady with her NASCAR shirt toting around her kid in a diaper!" instead of "Haha, look at this fat lady with her 2Pac shirt and her kid in diapers", it's totally acceptable to mock and demean them.

I imagine many people feel themselves to be an arbiter of who is, or is not "trash". I suppose it allows one a feeling of self-validation coupled with a dogmatic ranking of both the individual and the culture. By diminishing those around us, we feel ourselves to be raised above the "others".

My father did the same thing, though he directed his judgments at minorities... but at the end of the day, it appears to be six of one, half a dozen of the other I suppose.

in fact it is a common symbol in the Americas and India... why the comment on the website

But a swastika on a nazi blood flag, is not a symbol of good luck. I wonder if she had a certain tat on her skin anyway, indicating the birth of the Fuehrer...

Hell before the Nazis used it was also a symbol of good luck in Europe at one time.

As a medic I took care of an old shaman when I was young, he had one, and I was about to react, when he patiently explained that in broken spanish. His home language, Mixtec, that went to show me...

Ever since he moved to Mexico City though... he had that misunderstand with us ladinos.

I took care of other native peoples over the years,so I learned to not have a gut reaction to things like that, never mind my dad survived the holocaust... now the day I had a gang member with that, and I explained it to the kid... when he got to the ER he asked for a knife and cut it off his jacket. So context is everything....

57. It is still tacky in my book
Especially since Nazi swasticas are still used today by hate groups. My better half's grandma had an ancestor that fought in the Confederate Army , Has his name and rank on a small plaque and medal that he earned along with a small stars and bars flag tucked away in a discreet place with her late husband's medals . Sure not everyone who brazenly wears the stars and bars as a cultural fashion statement or who put tiny flags on motor cycles are white supremists but in certain crowds it could be considered tacky

Who knows, he could be a former showgirl drag performer who thought it would be a good idea to get tits in the 1970's. He could be a MTF who got the tits but not the hormones and who decided he would rather be an old man than an old woman.... or an old man with tits or an old woman with a beard.

58. Humor is interesting.
What would make someone else laugh uncontrollably might not be funny to me. Robin Williams comes to mind. I don't find him funny, but he is a multi-millionaire because others do. Everybody is different.

In the end, I think if something can make a person smile, it can't be all bad.

Each time I have seen him, I was already in my car and he was heading into the store. I can't wait for the day that's he's standing behind me in line, so that after I pay I can turn to him and say to the cashier, "Let me introduce you to this handsome young man standing behind me. See his shirt? That means that he attends the flagship school of a racist, sexist, and homophobic cult. Don't you feel lucky to be waiting on him, Mrs. Rodriguez?"

I wear sports bras pretty much always because I only have one breast and a sports bra keeps the fake boob well anchored in place. And I do wear my bras without a shirt.

I was actually going to leave this comment at that and then I realized, I see women in sports bras all the time when it gets above 72 degrees in San Francisco. It doesn't seem out of place at all. Why wear both a bra and a shirt when it's hot?

I'll confess a secret. Sometimes I wish that I had zero. There's an aesthetic value in symmetry. Though, of course, I would not want, in eightyfive million years, to go through, again, what I did to lose one.

But I developed an infection after the first mastectomy, so I have hanging "flaps" here and there.

I think the worst part about it though, is that there is nothing to keep a bra from riding up. My daughter cracks me up. "Your bosoms are too high again". I get even with her by setting the wayward ones back in their proper place, no matter where we are at the time. :)

And best wishes for a long and happy life right back at ya. :hi:

There is a huge philosophical divide on this which will not be resolved today or on this board- and that woman's choices would be at the center of the debate.

I am an overweight 50 year old man. I do not go to the beach in a speedo. I do not go to the grocery store in a sleeveless undershirt. I do not go to the mailbox in my boxer shorts for that matter. I am always covered from neck to elbow to ankle, except when swimming when I allow myself to wear shorts to the knee.

When I was 35 I had just bought this house, and I was doing some of the initial Harry Homeowner stuff. I went to the Ace Hardware filthy. As I was about to walk into the store, it suddenly occurred to me that I was taking a huge step in both my aging process and as a major homosexual- I was going out in public looking a mess, a dirty sweaty mess. But what was I supposed to do? Take a shower and then go back to laying irrigation system? I would have never finished the job. I crossed that line.

So it's true, that I have gone and will go to the grocery store sweaty, tired, and a little dusty sometimes; it works out that way. But I am covered in sensible clothing which offends neither the eye nor the opinion. My clothes say "Practical and utilitarian." not "I'm with stupid." or "Doesn't have any self respect left."

So some nights I get a kick out of the idea that a tourist from someplace not so sophisticated might happen upon our Walmart. Sometimes it's just that an inordinate percentage of the shoppers are gay, and other times young screaming soon-to-be drag queens come in to say hi to friends who work there, sometimes bagging for their cashier friend. Whatever is going on, it looks rather like there might be something in the water.

110. Maybe it's a generational thing...
I'm a Baby Boomer...probably last generation to actually witness a time when people dressed up to go shopping. Or out in public.

My parents would have been mortified to be seen in public wearing anything but decent clothing, bathed, and brushed. And we weren't even an upper class family.

Yeah, my generation went through the whole Hippie thing back in the 60s, but we've gotten older and learned that caring about how one looks in public is as much about respect for others as well as respect for ourselves.

46. The biggest thing about Wallmart is they do not show the price of what they sell.
Edited on Fri Sep-04-09 01:24 AM by RandomThoughts
Sure they tell you if it cost $19 dollar or $29.

But for displays to be accurate, you would have to have a sign that says something like.

Shoe for sale, made in a country by child labor without education facilities for 50cents and hour, using rubber and plastic refined without regulations for pollution. You can buy the shoe for $16 dollars, but there is a $3 surcharge collected to pay for people to lobby against groups that try and get better wages and better work conditions, and to lobby against stopping economies of scale from eliminating anyone that is not part of a certain network.

Or you can buy this $29 dollar shoe where nobody gets hurt making the shoe, children get to go to school before entering work force, and people are allowed to bargain for wages, however like the other shoe, this shoe also includes part of the cost to pay to help the owners of Wallmart to create laws, and to pay for conventions of employees where behavioral modification techniques learned from cults are used on workers. The price also includes the collection of data on your buying habits so that if you are later shown to show certain purchasing patterns you can be red flagged as part of a potentially bothersome group and information can be kept to potentially be used to be sent to your bosses so that they know your economic situation should be stifled.

After much thought, you might pick a shoe, but you would still walk around wondering why you did not realize that... one shoe, does not a pair make.

No company is perfect, and some of the consolidations of mega corps often make me wonder if they are the best situations for society. Sure they can do good things also, and the people themselves at the place are mostly good, as are many people that shop at Walmart, it is just perspective of what is important in our decisions on things like where we shop and how we choose to act in work environments.

You will not convince me or anyone else that either is an equivalent to your phrase "lowest margins". I am not preoccupied with minutiea but with clarity. Sure you can say "lowest margins" and then direct your reader to 80 year old manifestos of Breton or Tzara but then are you communicating to this modern audience? And, I'm pretty sure that not one person depicted on the walmart link would take comfort in either manifesto with your phrase, "lowest margins" and DUer's mocking of them.

we should call this the Walmart culture. It appears
to me that the people photographed are dressed the way

I see this as an example of the great refusal of
people at the, "lower margins of society" to accept
the scorn heaped upon them by those above them economically
and socially.

In a world dominated by capital and it's privileges,

132. It is the only thing which can possibly explain baggy ass pants.
I suppose it was inevitable. Flapper styles came from the street and morphed into high fashion; same with beatnik style which gave way to pop and hippie styles, all of which could eventually be found in Saks Fifth Avenue. But wearing pants with the waist below the butt cheek, grasping at ones pants or private parts, appears to be a fashion so vulgar that it won't die from success. Prison-chic is now at least 20 years old.

The reason rap music thrives is no mystery- most people can't sing and spoken word rhymes have fascinated people, especially those with limited access to other entertainment, for centuries. While Shakespeare was writing works so wonderfully wordy, discreetly bawdy, and deep that they are routinely shortened for modern performances, the Cockneys chanting dirty tales in less formal settings.

And lower than people who can afford to not shop at Walmart.

But, I think there is something else going on here, as well. Living in San Francisco, I've seen a lot of "christian" sites who post pictures of the so-called freaks in my city.

Low-er-ed. I am so happy that I raised my daughter in a city where bare-butted, leather-chapped midgets walk the street freely, where bearded roller-skating nuns are commonplace, and where old men with lovely breasts get barely a glance.

The problem is the assumption that these people represent a lower class that is somehow incapable of conducting themselves any other way. Whether one follows the assumption with pity or laughter matters little.

IMO, of course.

These people don't represent a "class". They are just individuals who have made some very unusual fashion choices and personal statements, some funny and some just plain bewildering in their deviation from the "norm".

Dubya, a pretty rich guy by most people's standards, was known to do stupid things too

Note the socks - if we didn't know him already, we'd mistake him for one of those folks

100. Why is everyone assuming the people in these pictures are poor.
Walmart is accessible to EVERY neighborhood in EVERY city of EVERY socioeconomic status. I live in an upper middle class neighborhood in Maryland and believe me, I have seen scenes like this in my local Walmart, Target, Kmart, Shopper's Food Warehouse and Giant Food Store. People of America...WE ARE TACKY (and apparently proud of it ;-) ).

113. thank you! I know some people who aren't poor who can't be bothered
to wash or change into decent clothing before appearing at, for example, a town meeting.

This happened one night last week at a local town meeting.

The guy owns a whole damned shopping center (OK it's a small one in a small town but still...he's got some money)

He shows up at the meeting in filthy clothing and unwashed...in a small room...yech.

people have no thought, or consideration for, others, apparently.

And furthermore, this kind of meanspirited bullshit is just wrong.

Funny to see people complaining about others who don't bathe or wear clean clothes (most likely a mental issue)... yet they apparently have no manners at all if they think this kind of mockery is ok.

I walked the whole store, and I saw nothing of interest. I didn't see any spectacularly tacky people, and unfortunately no sexy people. Now, that wouldn't be such a bad thing except that there were lots of children there, and with no sexy people whatsoever in sight, that means that the mediocre are reproducing at an alarming rate.

Some people love to point and laugh at people below their class level.

I had several Democrats in my caucus who were what people here would laugh at. They dressed funny, they talked funny and they drove crappy vehicles. Yet they got out and caucused for a cause we both believed in. I learned a great deal about people and integrity from that event.

This guy isn't poor:

He spent a lot of money to look like an asshole. And he patronizes an asshole company.

He probably makes twice as much money as I do. So how is it classist to mock him for a.) driving a hideous vehicle and b.) shopping at a store that makes the world a worse place?
