Spoke with the front office staff: Whether or not the President's speech is aired on Tuesday depends on the individual teacher. If it will be viewed in class, a "note" goes home to parents. If the teacher doesn't want to air the speech, no note is required(?) I asked if both Reagan's and Bush's speeches were aired, the staff person said she wasn't there then and referred me to the principal (I don't know why something like school precedent wasn't know by the school staff. You'd think they'd be prepared to answer a simple question like this. But then, living in a strong GOP county, they're probably not used to such inquiries). Anyway, I have a call into the principal in hopes of having this answered.
Will update when I find out...

2. I have a strong memory of being shuffled into the school auditorium in 1957 ... |
|
when I was in first grade, to watch Eisenhower's second inaugural address. I remember we sat cross-legged on the floor. I remember only that it had something to do with the president. I know my parents were staunch Adlai Stevenson Democrats. I don't recall them caring, or me caring (I was 6 years old!). It was about flags and pomp and circumstance and the office of the presidency.

3. i havent been following this, but i guess obama is addressing a speech to all kids in schools |
|
across the nation next week?
and this is what the tiff is. as opposed to just going into a class room and chatting as he and other pres has done in past?
i dnt know that any other pres has ever done that and i cannot recall ever listening to a pres in school, nor have my children ever listened to a pres speech in the past over decade. so this might be a new thing.

6. Cenk (TYT) reports there is precedence for this... |

It’s been done before, although FOX says otherwise :eyes: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x364816Both Reagan and Bush spoke to school kids. Reagan spoke about taxes! I’m wondering about the hypocrisy.

4. I just got off the phone with my son's principal, too. |
|
I live in West Virginia. The principal said that she intends to take a look at the text of the speech, but that if she doesn't see anything that's obviously inappropriate for children, then all classrooms at my son's school will be watching the speech. She agrees with me that it seems strange for people to be protesting a speech about the importance of education, and that some of these "protests" are probably politically and/or racially motivated. She also told me that she will read the President's speech "with pleasure" before making a final decision, that she admires and deeply respects the President, and that it's important for children to see and hear our leaders in a respectful way.
I was glad to hear this. :)

7. You should ask the principal |
|
What happens if your child's teacher doesn't want to air the speech, but you want your child to hear it? Why should the teacher's politics trump yours?

I happen to have next Tuesday off. Depending on how this transpires, there may be a parent picketing in front of the school...;)
