Rhode Island gov. defends speech at anti-gay marriage event

Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri on Wednesday defended his decision to speak at a fundraising banquet for a Massachusetts group that considers homosexuality unhealthy and that opposes letting same-sex couples raise children.

Carcieri said on WPRO-AM that, at the request of a friend, he agreed to talk about "traditional marriage" as keynote speaker at a Massachusetts Family Institute banquet on Oct. 5.

On its Web site, the organization calls homosexuality an "unhealthy practice and destructive" and says children raised by single adults or unwed couples are at higher risk of bad grades, dropping out of school early or ending up in jail.
