out of school on September 8th and explain that their kids will have a more positive educational experience listening to the president's speech live than they would have had in normal classes that day.

2. That's a good idea.
The children can listen to the president's speech and then discuss it with their parents. They will pay much more attention at home than they would at school.

3. hmmm- not a bad idea, actually.
Of course it would probably be an "unexcused absence" but who cares? The kids would certainly get more out of listening to the President that staying locked in a building where free thought is curtailed.

5. If I had kids, and if I lived in a state that planned to censor Obama's speech
I would do so. But no kids and I know our Vermont kids in the public school system will be watching.

I'm curious to view the speech myself. Anyone know what network it will air on?

7. Too bad we have a DVR
I don't think that liberal parents should make a big deal out of this, either. Just tape it and show it to the kiddos as usual (at least that's what we do).

8. It's an historical moment
By pulling your kids and having them watch it live, they will be participating in history.

That's perhaps the most valuable educational experience they could have all year.

13. Sorry to disagree...
Obama's acceptance speech in Chicago's Grant Park was far more historical and we watched it live AND again the next day.

Time of day doesn't matter anymore because of DVR's (which we use for MOST of our tv watching anyway).

10. DVR be damned.
I'll be there to pull little Miss OHT on Tuesday. We'll watch it together at home at the appointed time.

It's about respect for the President of The United States - not politics.

It's citizenship - one of the things they're supposed to learn in school.

It's about teaching them character - not fear or disdain for the President.

We are their first teachers. If our schools don't support these principles, we have to teach yet another lesson in citizenship - dissent.

11. You go, OHT! Well said, and I hope you say the same words to your kid's teacher and principal.

Edited to add: This is one of the rare times where I wish there was a "recommend post" feature.
