...planned on doing just that. It appalls me that some people would actually politicize education!!
Oh sure, they'll show Bush's numb-nut address to students but not Obama's.
Needless to say, I will be attending the next School Board meeting looking for answers that will not make any sense other than to either defray or deflect the ingrained hostility towards Obama.
Here's what's posted on the school districts website:
Message from Dr. Fellin regarding President Obama's address...
Hello! I hope this message finds you enjoying this gorgeous weather that September is bringing to us!
I want to take a moment to inform you about the Saucon Valley School District's approach to the address President Obama is going to make to our Nation's children at 12pm on Tuesday, September 8th.
We recognize that President Obama's message may be of historical significance and are certainly very hopeful that his message is one of helping our students understand the importance of education, participating and staying in school, and valuing the learning process. We are aware that some media are suggesting that his message may be politically motivated. I am hopeful his message is intended to be positive and appropriate for all our community members to help us as educators and you as parents have our children understand the importance of education.
We are not going to organize our students in a particular fashion to watch this address. There will be no live broadcast of this address. The address will be taped and then viewed by our administrative team at which time it will then be determined if any, all, or part of the address are appropriate for our students. We would then share the speech with our teaching staff who will exercise professional judgment based on the age of their students, developmental readiness, and academic connections to our curriculum, to use any portion of the recorded message.
Fundamentally, I believe that we need to be socially and politically knowledgeable as American citizens so we can bring our own critical thinking to issues that are occurring in our country. It is not our role as a School District to support one political party or another, but we do feel a responsibility to expose our students to information and teach them to be critical thinkers so they can choose freely how to interact with political or social issues in our country or world.
The President's message will be posted as a link on our web page so that you, as a family with your child may view, if you so choose and discuss the message together.
Dr. Sandra Fellin
Superintendent
