White House Tells Progressive Groups: You’ve Been Rolled on Public Option
By: Jane Hamsher Friday September 4, 2009 10:29 am
http://campaignsilo.firedoglake.com/2009/09/04/white-house-tells-progressive-groups-youve-been-rolled-on-public-option/

I guess the White House has figured that support for a public plan will only get more entrenched if they let it pass the House on the first go-round. Per Brian Beutler, they're now telling "reform groups" (aka the veal pen) that the public option is a goner:

Low-level White House officials have reached out to certain reform groups that have staked their ground on the need for a public option, I'm told, and warned them not to spend any more money advocating for the policy--that it's just not worth it.

The New York Times says that "It's so important to get a deal will do almost anything it takes to get one." To say that this is an inadequate response to this deeply moral issue, and perhaps the defining moment of his Presidency, is the most charitable response I can think of. The veal pen orgs have obliged the White House and stopped advertising against Blue Dogs since Rahm Emanuel called them "fucking stupid" and ordered them to in early August.

Well, we've been telling people since June 23 that in the end, it will all come down to the House. And here we are.

We've been working toward this moment for months now. And we're ready.

It's not over. Forty progressive members of the House can still stop this if they stand together and demand that no health care bill pass that doesn't have a public option. And no, "triggers" doesn't count, Rahm.

Call them and let them know that if they flunk this one, we cut up their progressive membership card and look for new leadership.

1. in less than a DAY more than 26,000 signatures on the on the Progressive Change Committee petition
from the comments section:

In less than a day, more than 200 former Obama staffers, 13,000 Obama volunteers, and 23,000 Obama donors have signed a Progressive Change Committee petition saying that a bill without a public option “would not be change we can believe in."

_______________

this refers to the HonorKennedy.com petition

PETITION TO THE SENATE: "Ted Kennedy was a courageous champion for health care reform his entire life. In his honor, name the reform bill that passed Kennedy's health committee 'The Kennedy Bill' -- then pass it, and nothing less, through the Senate."

4. Does kind of look like it's the Whitehouse trying to kill the public option
If they really wanted it they would not encourage allies to stop running ads. I agree with the statement that they decided support would get too entrenched if they let it pass the House. Well, I'm sure it will pass the house. If Rahm and the boys at the Whitehouse want to defeat this they need to stand accountable for it.

5. here's a TARGETED LIST of safe Dem Reps who need a call in support of the Public Option
more from the comments section:

Look at these districts — 17 Dems with at least a D+20 rating who are in no danger of losing to a republican challenger in 2010:

Rangel, Charles NY-15 D+41
Meeks, Gregory W. NY-06 D+36
Brady, Robert PA-01 D+35
Davis, Danny IL-07 D+35
Meek, Kendrick FL-17 D+34
Rush, Bobby IL-01 D+34
Becerra, Xavier CA-31 D+29
Lewis, John GA-05 D+26
Jackson-Lee, Sheila TX-18 D+24
Berman, Howard CA-28 D+23
Cohen, Steve TN-09 D+23
Green, Al TX-09 D+22
Van Hollen, Chris MD-08 D+21
Eshoo, Anna CA-14 D+21
DeGette, Diane CO-01 D+21
Scott, Bobby VA-03 D+20
Schakowsky, Jan IL-09 D+20

As Jane put it almost two weeks ago:

These members aren’t in any danger from the teabaggers. So why aren’t they making a stand for the interests of their districts? Why aren’t they cosigning the letter to Kathleen Sibelius with 60 of their fellow Democrats, saying they will vote “no” against any bill that does not have a strong public option?

Why are they not willing to stand up for what 70+% of the American people want? Maybe one more phone call will shake them loose from whatever is holding them back . . .
