I sent this letter re. the healthcare protestors to the local paper
It was believed that Vladimir Lenin called Western communist sympathizers “useful idiots.” As I watch the conservative rank and file’s reaction to the Democrats’ efforts to reform the American healthcare system, I’m reminded of the term...because you guys in the streets are very useful to Dick Armey’s FreedomWorks, a lobbying firm that takes huge amounts of money from the healthcare industry, and the for-profit health insurance mills; and oh my God are you people idiots.

You’re going out and making signs, protesting, going on television in defense of the Health Insurance industry? Are you NUTS? Is there anyone in America who actually LIKES the health insurance industry? Crack dealers have a better reputation than the health insurance industry. When you pay money to a crack dealer, he gives you crack. He doesn’t take your money then deny you crack because you have a “pre-existing condition” like being addicted to crack. He doesn’t switch you from crack to aspirin because aspirin costs him less than crack. He doesn’t make you change crack dealers because he realigned the network and your old crack dealer’s not in the new network. He doesn’t quit selling you crack because you hit a lifetime maximum on crack purchases. Health insurance providers do all those things.

I also really enjoy some of the ravings on the right, and how unbelievably wrong they are. Rationing? That happens now—first by setting prices so high a lot of people can’t afford their product in the first place, then by denying coverage. But when the public plan rations, as you know it will, a person trained in medicine’s going to do it—not a person trained in accounting whose bonus revolves around denying people care.

And best is the “death panels” resigned Alaska governor Sarah Palin claims are in the public plan. They call this wild idea, where she claims doctors will try to convince senior citizens to commit suicide, a policy statement. It’s not. Politicians who walk out on the people who elected them eighteen months before their terms are up cannot make policy statements. What it is, is proof that proper Thorazine dosing for raving lunatics is still not an exact science.

So all you teabaggers, birthers, deathers and health insurance supporters, do me a favor: Burn your sign. Put that teabag to good use in a cup of boiling water. And let the adults in the Democratic Party work this out.
