80% of teh uninsured have full time jobs
Get the facts straight - 80% of the uninsured have full-time jobs. 62% of all bankruptcies in America are because of unpaid medical bills. 75% of all people who file for bankruptcy for medical reasons HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE! Enough is enough!

Medical Bankruptcy in the United States, 2007:
Results of a National Study
David U. Himmelstein, MD,a Deborah Thorne, PhD,b Elizabeth Warren, JD,c Steffie Woolhandler, MD, MPHa
a
Department of Medicine, Cambridge Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, Mass; bDepartment of Sociology, Ohio University,
Athens; and cHarvard Law School, Cambridge, Mass.

BACKGROUND: Our 2001 study in 5 states found that medical problems contributed to at least 46.2% of
all bankruptcies. Since then, health costs and the numbers of un- and underinsured have increased, and
bankruptcy laws have tightened.

METHODS: We surveyed a random national sample of 2314 bankruptcy filers in 2007, abstracted their court
records, and interviewed 1032 of them. We designated bankruptcies as “medical” based on debtors’ stated
reasons for filing, income loss due to illness, and the magnitude of their medical debts.

RESULTS: Using a conservative definition, 62.1% of all bankruptcies in 2007 were medical; 92% of these
medical debtors had medical debts over $5000, or 10% of pretax family income. The rest met criteria for
medical bankruptcy because they had lost significant income due to illness or mortgaged a home to pay medical
bills. Most medical debtors were well educated, owned homes, and had middle-class occupations. Three
quarters had health insurance. Using identical definitions in 2001 and 2007, the share of bankruptcies attrib-
utable to medical problems rose by 49.6%. In logistic regression analysis controlling for demographic factors,
the odds that a bankruptcy had a medical cause was 2.38-fold higher in 2007 than in 2001.

CONCLUSIONS: Illness and medical bills contribute to a large and increasing share of US bankruptcies.

5. thank you
it is important

years ago when we were in college we had to declare bankruptcy because I had to have a hysterectomy and we did not have insurance

but before that surgery, I had several diagnostics tests as they thought it was cancer

and then the first surgeon only took out my uterus and my cervix as I was "too young" to lose my hormone filled ovaries...

exactly one year to the day of the first surgery, I had to have my ovaries out too...turns out they were probably the biggest issue...

so

bankruptcy because of medical bills...

The amazing thing about the study was the lack of reporting of it by the MSM.

There was a study done on 250 Philadelphia homeowners facing foreclosure. Fifty percent of them reported being depressed. Sixty percent reported skipping meals because they could not afford food. Another 48 percent said that they could no longer afford to pay for their prescription medication because of their pending foreclosures.

14. And some of the jobs pay too little to pay the cost of the insurance premiums
When you make 8 bucks an hour $70 a week for insurance is quite a bite. :hi:

19. Medicare for all is the prime solution.
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 02:29 PM by Trillo
It won't cost any more, but govt will have to tax to pay for it, then individuals will no longer need to pay elsewhere for it, so it's sort of a wash when viewed at the individual level.

Obama would score a big hit in increased populist credentials were his speech on the 9th to take the "public option" off the table and advocate instead of for Medicare for All.
