Here is a link to info on the President's historic speech to American students and the Dept. of Education's suggested lesson plans.

4. the department of education and president obama
are offering american school children the opportunity to have a hugely popular politician speak to them directly.
i know the students, in the high school where i teach, are very excited about the upcoming event. many of the student's family members worked hard supporting obama's candidacy and after the election these students were walking on air for months. for too many it was the most validating moment in their lives.
its important for adults to recognize the need of younger people to be included in discussions about their futures. president obama, the father of school aged children, clearly recognizes that an inclusive and respectful approach will gain many supporters.
hopefully this small investment of addressing america's youth and encouraging them to take their educations seriously will pay off and we won't have as many ill-informed, reactionary citizens in the future.
how any american can act as if this televised "talk" is inappropriate is beyond me.
it is like those who truly believe the right wing spin and who supported the bush junta are now suspended in some sort of mass cognitive dissonant reaction to the tidbits of reality that are slowly verifying the awful truth that we have been complaining about since 2000.
like most individuals, when faced with information that proves the foundations of their world view are false, the vocal minions of the "i'm my own worst enemy army" disregard the provable truth and continue to believe, even more strongly, what has been proven to be wrong.
if the spectacle wasn't so frightening it would be funny.
