Did Anyone Here Catch Thom Hartman's Straw Poll Today About The President's Address To Congress?....
Thom Hartman conducted a straw poll today on what people thought the President would say at his Address to Congress on Wednesday. Essentially - will he cave to pressures or will he act FDR-like and if he caves - what will you do?

I was only able to catch about 15 minutes of the calls - and was surprised that the overwhelming consensus was that the President was going to 'cave' on Wednesday and be a sell-out.

I was a bit taken aback by this - because - this was on Air America and the listeners are mainly liberals and progressives. And here after just 7 months in office - probably many of the same people that voted for him - are saying that he was going to sell them out.

What happened in these past 7 months to change the mindset of the enthusiastic electorate that gave him the White House?

Then I got to thinking - does the President have a handle on what these people are saying about him? I'm sure he's busy to the point of not being able to get a feel for how he's being thought of these days. I'm sure that he has his people tell him - but I was wondering if they are being truthful with him?

My suggestion to the President - is for him to listen to his own speeches that he delivered while on the campaign trail and when he won the presidency and his inaugural speech. Listen to the words that he spoke to us and really hear what we heard.

I think he will be FDR-like on Wednesday and he won't cave or sell or wimp out on this HCR. I think he knows that if he does that he will essentially take an enthusiastic electorate and basically make them drop out of anything political - if he does 'cave'.

I think he knows better than to do that.

We have a few days before this speech. Please call the White House Comment Line at 1-202-456-1111 and tell him that you support him getting tough with the Repugs and those Dems that aren't on board. You'll be glad you did.

1. Why are you surprised?
Aren't you reading all comments here from DUers expecting him to cave, and even if a bill is delivered, they don't expect anything meaningful from it?

4. You Just Need To Follow The Prompts ..........
the WH lines are busy (as one can imagine given the gravity of this issue) and the operators have to take the calls in line. They will tell you that you'll be handled in the order you called and that there will be silence on the line until they are able to get to you. You just need to have patience and wait your turn.

Your being silly by saying that they just gave you the same number you called. Yes - that is part of the recorded message - but it seems to me that you are putting this out there to dissuade others from calling the White House.

Are you one of those new DU sign-up trolls - just out to obfuscate?

3. The only thing we really know about his speech wednesday is its a make or break one for him
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 07:47 AM by ThomWV
He will either stand up or he will not. If he withers now he's a lame duck for the next 3 years. If he stands up progressives will follow him anywhere he wants to go as will all the rest of the people who elected him to national office.

And by the way, I disagree that his is so busy he doesn't know where he stands in the public mind. He knows precisely where he stands.
