I bring a message from Helen Thomas to DU
Yes, it's for real, and no, it's not political.

Anyone who doesn't know by now where Helen stands politically probably isn't on DU anyway.

Helen is of Christian Lebanese origin, and she has a favorite Lebanese restaurant near her home in Washington D.C.
My brother and I try to meet her there whenever I'm in Washington, and that's now. The food is out of this world,
and reasonable to boot (I picked up the tab this time, so I know-she usually won't let me get away with it). As
a favorite of much of Washington's Lebanese and Palestinian communities, it's often packed on a Friday night, but
as we got there early, and it's Ramadan, the Muslim diners didn't start to trickle in until after sundown, so we
got served pretty quickly. Helen is obviously well-known at the place and is always given a special welcome, along
with anyone with her (my few words of Arabic didn't hurt).

Anyway, Helen's message to DU:

She said that any time anyone from DU is in Washington, and goes to that restaurant, and sees her there (she's there
at least once a week), is most welcome to go up to her, and say hi, and chat for a bit if she's not with guests. Tell
her you're from DU. You can even tell her you got the message from the two brothers (one in Germany) who are the sons
of a close former colleague of hers (we lost our father 9 years ago).

You can talk about anything. Just please keep in mind that even though she is 89, she is still a full-time working
journalist, and that posting stuff publicly that is a little forceful has the potential to compromise her standing,
so please don't.

Two things I can relate:

One is that Helen and I still call the airport closest to Washington "National Airport," and we both stubbornly refuse
to add the name of a right-wing president who never liked Washington in the first place.

The other is what she said after I brought up Obama's bringing her that cupcake on their birthday. I told her I hoped
she wasn't going to be any easier on him because of the cupcake. Helen, who never misses a beat, said, "oh, he'll have
to offer me a lot more than that!"

The Lebanese restaurant is called Mama Ayesha's ("mama EYE-sha's") and it's on Calvert street just off of Connecticut
Avenue. The food and the décor (welcome to Beirut, ca. 1890) are worth the visit, although the chance to visit with
Helen for a couple of hours is not one I ever pass up. Our father was, for those who don't know, a colleague of Helen's
for some forty years or so, so we've known her most of our lives, although we grew a lot closer when our dad passed. My
brother and I picked her up downtown and we got a cab up to the restaurant. It was a gorgeous evening, so we walked her
home afterwards. She is still a little unsteady on her feet after her ordeal last year, so it was slow going--our little
bonus!

For the record, they have lots of healthy stuff there, and even vegetarians can have a field day. I had Musakan, which
is nothing like the Greek dish that sounds like it (Moussaka). It is a half chicken on sort of a pita pancake, baked
in herbs and covered with sautéed onions.

Until next time at Mama Ayesha's--aleikum salaam, y'all!

132. Mama Ayesha's
When I lived in DC, I visited there several times. Saw Helen there once or twice. The food really out of sight, and, as I recall, the service was pretty damn good, too. There was a good dessert place if you crossed over the bridge right where the restaurant is. It's on the right just as you start up Connecticut Avenue. It's in the basement. I wonder if it's still there.

5. Ms. Thomas is one of the VERY few in the media I respect....
She knows journalism and practices it as opposed to the punditry posing as journalists. Helen Thomas and Bill Moyer are exceptions to 'the rule' now, imo, and that is a very sad commentary on what the media has become.

Recommended.

10. Helen didn't give Clinton, or any other president, a free pass
She adored JFK, but never lightened up purposely on any President. It's just that Bush Lite was the
first one in her career that couldn't handle her questions. The others all took it as an occupational
hazard that as President of the United States, one of tasks you would have to face would be taking
questions from Helen Thomas. But fer Pete's sake, if you're going to take on the leaders of Russia,
China, and the rest of the world, face Congress, tackle the economy, and do ALL that other stuff
that comes with the job, if you can't handle a little lady journalist from Detroit, you shouldn't
be president in the first place.

9. thank you...
I just love that lady.

My wife is headed to a conference in DC at the end of the month. Maybe we'll check it out. Love Lebanese food, so it's an added bonus!

What would i say to Helen Thomas, though? "You rock!"... mmm, maybe. I'd probably give her a jar of homemade jam and tell her to keep at it. I might ask her who she thinks is a worthwhile reporter nowadays...

Cheers!

118. Oh I wish! I have a request DFW..........
I am about 600 or 700 miles from DC, in Maine. I used to spend a lot of time there painting murals....
but I am kept close to home ( Maine) by my SS income now!)
I would like to write/illustrate a children's picture book about Helen Thomas. I feel it is VERY IMPORTANT for children to be guided in the direction of GOOD VALUES. I have read the books that she has written (more than once).
I picture something similar to Barbara Cooney's Emily ( Dickenson) or Eleanor ( Roosevelt).
I have an excellent resume, last year I illustrated a book of the first naval battle during the Revolutionary War, for the Machias Historic Association.
Can you please present the idea to Ms Thomas, if it is a reality I have friends in the DC area I could stay with and I could manage to scrape up the travel money. I e-mailed her several years ago and never got an answer.
BTW, I too LOVE Lebanese food! The Tayoun Family ran a restaurant in Philadelphia, where we ate frequently, Poppa Tayoun shared his hummus recipe with me...........and I make the best hummus in the state of Maine!

Of course, to me, she's my parents' friend, Helen from when I was a child. I didn't know what all these
people were. My dad used to take me with him to the Senate Press gallery in the Capitol when I was small,
and I used to think he had weird friends. The kids I played with had names like Billy Caldwell and Bob
Hicks. His friends were all named Senator Dirksen or Senator Humphrey and I thought what kind of a funny
name was "Senator?" Only later on did I realize what kind of company I'd been keeping.

view their present moments. :) I love, "what kind of name is Senator"!

My first remembrances of Helen was of her asking President Kennedy questions and she made a forever impression on me. I must have been all of 10 years old at the time.

Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 05:28 PM by DFW
She often responds to them, even if they come from strangers. She told me last night that she gets her share
of hate mail, as you can well imgaine, so mail from admirers, no matter how redundant you risk being, is always
welcome. Tell her you were sent by her friend who lives in Germany and just was with her at Mama Ayesha's last
Friday night. I can't guarantee she'll have time to respond, but you stand a better than even chance of getting
a reply from her.

In the OP, I described the chicken dish I had, but they have plenty of beef and lamb dishes as well.

I didn't go into detail, as the most frequently asked question is whether or not vegetarians are
accommodated, but the meat slections are pretty fabulous as well. When you read the menu, the first
temptation is to order one of everything!

Not that it matters either way but I was tricked into thinking Helen was Jewish. Wasn't there some remark by Bush about her being an "old Jew"? My mom had to go to an assisted living situation so I've been cleaning out her house. One of the books I packed home is called 'Front Row At The White House'. Because of this post I just picked it up and opened it. There's a letter from my mother's friend of 75 years and a photo copy of Helen's autograph and note to Mary Lea Stinger, dated 1999. My mom and Mary Lea have been proud life long Democrats.

117. I'm surprised Ann Coulter even knew Helen was of Arab background
Here is my favorite Ann Coulter story:

Ann Coulter is being driven through rural Connecticut by her chauffeur, and she is pressing him to step on it
because they are late for something or other. They round a curve, and the car smashes right into an aging cow.
The car is OK, but the animal is killed instantly. Seeing a farmhouse nearby, Coutler sends her chauffeur to go
to the farmer whose animal he had just killed, tell him whose chauffeur he was, and explain the accident, and
throw money at him until he was OK, and get back to the car ASAP.

The chauffeur goes, knocks on the door of the farmhouse, goes in, and disappears. Three hours later, he reappears,
hair and clothes disheveled, and carrying two bottles of wine. Coutler is fuming with rage, but also baffled by
her chauffeur's appearance. She demands to know what happened inside the house.

Her chauffeur says that he went in, said what Coulter told him to say, and the farmer fed him a fabulous meal,
whereupon his daughters took him up to the bedroom and showed him a rollicking good time, and then insisted he
take two of their best bottles from their wine cellar as a parting gift.

Coulter, still boiling with anger at the delay, grills him as to whether he said anything else. The chauffeur
assures Coulter that he said nothing other than what Coulter had told him to say:

He says that he had told them that he was Ann Coulter's driver, and that he had just killed the old cow.

55. I've said this here before.
I think of Helen as the Grandmother I never had. I've loved her since I was a boy. It would indeed be a great honor to meet her. What a gal!

I was at a stupid job interview once and I had to stand up in front of a bunch of people and answer the question: Who are three people you'd most like to have dinner with?" Helen was my first choice and I was so disappointed when I had to explain to the people in the room who she was. In retrospect I think it was saying, "What is wrong with you people," that lost me the job, but I didn't really want it that badly anyway. Who in the hell would want to work for people who didn't know who Helen Thomas was?

In your description of her she is exactly as cool as I always knew she would be. Thanks so much for this, it's made my day.

Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 05:12 PM by DFW
My longest trips are my summer odysseys, of which today is the last full day. I head back (Air France willing)
tomorrow, and will be back in Germany Monday morning, if my connection in Paris goes smoothly. One of the reasons
my trips back are sich madhouses are because there are so many people I really want to see when I'm here, as well
as my annual vacation on Cape Cod, for which I'd travel from Zanzibar if I had to.

This year, I've now had time to visit with all four of my "80-something" friends (my very own Fantastic Four), of
which Helen is one. All four of them are incredible people in their own right (the other three are Theodore Bikel,
who is now 85, Stan Lee, who will be 87 in December, and Ruth Westheimer, who turned 81 this year). They give me
inspiration and hope, proving that age is not an automatic barrier to continuing a productive, active life. I only
wish I knew Justice John Paul Stevens, as he seems to be a man I would admire as well. Actually, next year, my
Fantastic Four become the Fantastic three, as Helen will turn 90. Just amazing!

I was on a rare trip to California this summer for a few days, but rarely get there myself any more, which is a shame.
Theo Bikel still travels a lot, but Stan Lee less so, and the only time I get to see him is when I'm in L.A. although
his emails are a riot.

Doesn't seem to have slowed down all that much.

Anyway safe travels home and if you should ever get north of San Francisco area, give me a PM and I'll come and get you and your family. For dinner here in the redwoods.

138. Ok. I am with the poster upthread
who said you had to write your autobiography. You have to know these are not typical friendships. You have been witness to an era that the majority only see from a distance. And I for one would like to know more. You are truly blessed with knowing these people... and I also seem to recall you are friends with Dr. Dean and Mr. Gore...

And again, so glad you posted this. And I am sure the restaurant is pretty happy about it too. :)

139. I'm sure the restaurant does great business without me, too!
It doesn't appear to be such a secret, judging by how many people were there, especially after sundown (again,
remember it's Ramadan).

As for the rest, I have only met Al Gore twice. We have spoken and corresponded, but I couldn't say we are "friends."
I admire him like crazy, but couldn't say he'd instantly brighten up if you mentioned my name (wish it were otherwise!).
Howard, on the other hand, is indeed a friend, one I am proud to have. Even so, there are LOTS of people who travel in
these circles constantly, whose autobiographies would undoubtedly be a fascinating read. As a normal mortal who happened
to land in a path of life that brings me in contact with a lot interesting people, I am the first to say I find it stimulating
and enlightening to meet and hang out with them, and I am privileged call some of them friends. From the outside looking in,
yes, I guess they look like very atypical friendships. But once you get to know these people, and they become more human
and less iconic, they become much more approachable. Once you sit and have dinner and chew the fat with them a few times
with no cameras or Secret Service agents, publicity agents, or whatever, hanging around, they change from icons back to
people, and most of us have at least one or two friends or relatives they find interesting and stimulating, and categorize
in a similar fashion without seeing them on Sunday talk shows.

Keep in mind that I also have my day job, and most of it is out there in the real world, not in the heady circles you might
think I travel in constantly. I don't. I'm stationed overseas for my job most of the time, and since my wife is a German who
is perfectly content to continue living in her native land, it will probably stay that way for the rest of my professional
life, and maybe even beyond.

Even so, practically speaking, America is only as far away as the nearest airport, and that is a 16 minute drive from our
German house. I make use of it a lot. If I can meet up with some friends while I'm in some town, you bet I'll do it, whether
their names are Joe Blow and Plain Jane or Howard Dean and Helen Thomas. Luck of the draw, that's all. I did this thread
about Helen since we specifically talked about DU, and it would have been unfair to those here who admire her not to have
mentioned it. Otherwise, it would just have been another photo for the archives, and another memorable meal on the road.
Not all of them are. Stan Lee likes to eat at simple delis within a five minute walk from his office, and couldn't care
less about all the fancy "see and be seen" places on nearby Rodeo Drive. Just folks. Extraordinary folks, but folks just
the same.

"Just like you and me, but different," as the saying goes.

She is a real national treasure. I had the good fortune to attend a book signing of hers in NY a few years back. The place was packed to the rafters, unfortunately mostly with elderly people (pity more youth don't appreciate her) I actually ended up sitting on a book case on the side as all the seats were taken, but fortunately it was right in the front, one of the best "seats" in the house. Her discussion was excellent, and then I got to meet her personally, signed my book, and took a few photos. A moment I will forever treasure. Thanks for posting this wonderful piece.

So it's normal that you might see her there, especially before the WH press briefing.
This was taken after a Hay-Adams breakfast 2 and a half years ago when we were in DC
for my daughter's graduation from GW:

114. Oh, she knows alright.
But she's not superhuman enough to keep from smiling when she's told.

One really funny thing. She went to the ladies' room at one point, and while my brother and I too her hands
to walk her around, that is one place we didn't dare. Some twenty-something came out of the ladies' room bursting
with excitement and turned to us and said, "OMG, you'll never BELIEVE who I just helped walk into the ladies' room!"
We guessed "Helen Thomas?" but Helen came out and rejoined us an instant later, so the twenty-something figured
out really fast that we were not quite as clairvoyant as we made out to be.

Good to know that twenty-somethings recognize her, though. It shows that Helen's prominence has not just something
of a certain age group, and that her kind of responsible journalism is not completely a thing of the past - it
won't be as long as people remember her and what she stands for.

Very cool to know this. Helen's been my favorite political journalist for some 15 years. And I'm sure you don't miss ALL the fun!;)

109. OMG!! Mama Ayesha's is still there!
I also know it as the Calvert Cafe and ate there many a time back in the late 70's.

Damn! I mistakenly thought it was long gone so haven't even tried to go there when I've been there.

Helen Thomas or no Helen Thomas, it's a WONDERFUL restaurant.

Is Mama herself still around?

Oh, and I worked at National Airport for ten years and refuse to call it anything but that. I'm just hoping the name will get changed back in my lifetime.

111. I don't know about Mama herself
I never asked. I just assumed she was the matriarch of the family, and was long gone.

I'll ask Helen the next time I talk to her. I have to fly back to Europe tomorrow, but
Helen and I usually talk at least once a month on the phone, so I have to try to remember.

127. OK, listen- by making this post, you've let all of us share
in your dinner adventure with Helen Thomas. Sometimes I feel like I'm bruised and battered by my daily trips to DU. But your post was like a little vacation of joy and pleasure. By allowing us to piggy-back on your friendship with Helen, you've helped us live something we all want to experience. Thank you.

And I'm overjoyed that Helen approves of DU and it's members. That means she approves of me!

What a cool rockstar journalist wonderful woman. I hope she knows how loved she is.

130. Thanks for sharing that with us!
I love Helen Thomas! Her niece, Suzanne Geha, is an anchor on the news at WOOD-TV8 out of Grand Rapids, MI, which I watch regularly. Suzanne has been with them since the 70s.

Helen must read all her e-mails and reply to them. Twice I sent her Happy Birthday wishes, and she sent me a nice reply both times.

Thanks again for the delightful information.

This is Suzanne Geha:

133. Thanks for that. I had never seen a pic of any of Helen's relatives
There is a resemblance for sure. Helen is originally from Michigan, so at least part of her family
is apparently still there. Helen knows most of my family, of course, as we all come to Washington
fairly frequently, but I haven't been to Michigan in decades.
