Do you feel honored when people follow you on DU?
Just so they can unrecommend whatever you post? :-)

Does it give you sort of a sense of empowerment that they click on the post because they see your name?

Why do you think people do that? Isn't it sort of childish? Do they think you really give a shit?

Just saying...

(Not really)

I seem to have a fairly large anti-fan club of my own. Hadn't really thought about it as an honor, though.

see for yourself what seems to be important here which is the reason I really don't spend that much time here anymore. Too much fighting, juvenile activities or too much whatever, not enough substance. There is some good and the reason I still click on here once in a while but for deep political news and discussion, not here, too much negativity.

6. I sometimes get unrecs
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 10:22 AM by drm604
but I have no way of knowing if it's the same people or persons. I don't see how you could know unless every time they do it they post that fact in the thread.

Most of the threads I get unrecs on are ones that are likely to tick off trolls, so if I do get an unrec I know I've touched a nerve.

I can't prove it but I honestly get the impression that there may be agents representing certain economic interests who come on here to try to suppress certain topics by unrecing them. I guess that's sort of silly. Why would they be so concerned about one little internet forum? But still I wonder.

8. Do you think very many people do that?
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 09:58 AM by ThomWV
I know I have both recommended and unrecommended posts by individuals but it was always based on the post, not the person.

There are some posts that find themselves unrecommended for no good reason though, and I suspect those are people who have come here to disrupt the normal flow of ideas. I'll give you an example. Yesterday I got an E-mail notification from C-Span about an upcoming program replaying Presidential tapes from the Johnson years that I knew would be of interest to some folks here but also one they weren't much likely to become aware of. So I cut and paste the notification - no comment attached other than 'here it is, enjoy'. A couple of minutes later it had bumped down several spaces on the listing and it had received 5 views - and at least 1 Unrecommend. Now think about that. Nothing in the post was in any way controversial, no opinion of mine attached, very few people had seen it, and yet it was unrecommended.

Was it because I posted it and someone I pissed off at some earlier time Unrecommended it just for that, was it because it was un-newsworthy in their minds, or maybe it was because they didn't want to see the information get further attention. Who knows?

11. From what I have noticed...
there are only 3 or 4 trolls here, at the most, at any given time. They do come out when you hit a nerve. :-) It is not a problem.

20. Well, just take a look at what's happened to this post already,
Here is a post where a few folks are discussing the mechanics of the forum. Nothing controversial. Its not worth of a Recommend, its not worth of an Unrecommend. It is just a discussion.

So why was this one unrecommended? I think you hit it on the head - somebody simply follows you around and unrecommends your threads. What a silly thing to do. But you know what's equally silly. I think there is someone who automatically recommends all of my original threads - even my early morning posts which in a perfect world would be wired to automatically self destruct immediately after submission.

I like to see stuff that is different from my world view. Some people have actually gotten me to change my mind on an issue by showing me a different perspective. I think that debate can be educational and elevating if you are willing to see other world views

And that applies to all thread starters who think they have a posse of unrecommenders following them. Accept that not all your threads are worthy of being recommended.

Some of your threads are worthy of recommending. Some, like this one, are worthy of being unrecommended.

31. No. I would like for them to give their reasons though.
Sometimes I have posts that are not confrontational with any fellow Democrat or contain no criticism of the party that get voted down thus sparking the question in my mind as to why that particular post is unrecommended. Seems silly.

44. Meh. Nobody follows me, AFAIK, I don't follow anyone else.
I doubt I am known well enough for stalkers. hehhehehe

Seems a little creepy to me that anyone would actually do that. One would have to keep a list of people who have "slighted" them or just pissed them off elsewhere, held that grudge and be petulant enough to act upon it.

If there is anyone who does that, I have a few lives from my cats I could give them. They could spare one or two. LOL!
