"Earth terrorists" topple AM towers :)
http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/04/washington.towers.terrorism/index.html

I hope these towers were not use to transmit progressive talk shows, but more than likely they were transmitting right wing hate-mongering.

GOOD. Keep going, guys.

5. Well they need to target Rush and Glenn then
Wrong tower, guys.

Seriously, if they take Rush and Glenn out of the air in that area, would you cry?

If they take Malloy, Miller and Schultz out, I'd be pissed.

6. Ummm, I don't think that was such a good idea.
AM Radio transmitters aren't just for "hate talk" and obnoxious commercials - they're also used for cell phone/microwave transmitter towers, community service and for emergency management information - like severe weather, flood, and avalanche information. I grew up in Seattle and spent a lot of time out in Snohomish county - that area is out in the middle of the boonies and there's not much in the way of transmission towers. It's a very harsh location; fall/winter and spring being particularly bad weather wise out there.
Toppling those two towers may have just cut off pretty much all communication to several thousand people in the small ranching and farming communities in that area, plus cell coverage for travelers on the western side of the pass to Eastern Washington.
AM radio transmission is the easiest to transmit information with the low power - far less power at magnitude than FM radio transmission.

There's really no "protection to the environment" that toppling AM towers would give. The real issue I worry about is if this was a warm up to toppling other structures that some radicals believe actually do have the questionable potential to harm "living creatures" via sideband radiation - high voltage power lines.

If that happens later on this season, there could be some serious, serious life threatening damage done to not only the small communities around the area, but to the National Power Grid for the entire Western US.

Y'know, you can always argue that our way of life is unsustainable, but are you really willing to "burn down the house" for some short-lived feeling of having made some grand statement for your own sense of righteous indignation, or would you rather roll up your sleeves and work at the long slog of actually figuring out ways to clean up the house?
There are those in ELF tend to like to indulge in the grand destructive gestures that accomplish very little other than to turn people who would otherwise assist them with sustainable answers to environmental questions into enemies - because, frankly, no one likes to be violently attacked and potentially robbed of their means of survival.

13. question
Does AM serve any of the functions that are
considered positive about radio such as informing (for free) about
disasters, social or political causes/news, etc? I haven't listened since
the family sold the '64 station wagon. The one with the metal dash board -
made that AM sound like it was coming from a 55 gallon barrel. Hell, even
those are mostly plastic now.

14. WOW. CNN took the trouble to define "Domestic Terrorism" for this article...
the government defines domestic terrorism as use or threatened use of violence by a domestic group "against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives," the FBI's then-domestic terrorism chief, James F. Jarboe, explained in congressional testimony in 2002.

How many other recent stories could this definition apply for? Why didn't CNN bring this up for those?

23. Yes, and isn't it funny that I've never met any one who claims to be a member
Lots of activists around here. No "ELFs" that I'm aware of. I think the whole thing is a CIA front, designed to do exactly as you say, cast a bad light on the left.

Seriously, would a real environmentalist use such a destructive polluting machine like a bulldozer??

Makes as much sense as the ski mask wearing government agent who kicked in the Starfucks windows while holding the $4 cup of coffee they just bought in their hand, during the WTO protests.

17. Too bad the tower didn't fall on the ELF asshole
These guys are nothing but a bunch of punk cowards.

Ecoterrorists have a history of targeting property in Snohomish County. They are blamed for the multimillion-dollar fire that destroyed the Street of Dreams development near Echo Lake in 2008.

It doesn't matter if the people responsible for the radio tower vandalism were directly linked to ELF, said Gary Perlstein, a professor emeritus at Portland State University who has studied the domestic terrorism group.

“If it goes along with their philosophy, then they will claim responsibility,” Perlstein said.

Friday's action appears to be consistent with ELF's effort to curb urban sprawl, he said. Like other ELF acts, it appears well executed and likely was coordinated weeks in advance, Perlstein said.

“These are not spontaneous acts,” he said. “They're planned.”

While ELF typically doesn't condone violence against people, communiques have said ELF members “wouldn't hesitate to pick up the gun,” Perlstein said.

That Skotdal apparently was named on the sign that was left behind is a reason for concern, the professor said.

“I hope the police are watching his home,” Perlstein said.

19. How can you condone this?
on the suspicion that the radio waves were transmitting speech you don't like?

Are you kidding?

What the hell kind of precedent do you think that approving of this will set, when the GOP gets back in power? Should they then ignore terrorist acts, if they think it will shut down liberal speech?

20. KRKO is Snohomish County's Emergncy Alert System (EAS) station.
Edited on Sat Sep-05-09 01:59 PM by TheMightyFavog
http://www.northsound1380.com/engineering/disaster/

NorthSound 1380 (KRKO) is the Emergency Alert System (EAS) station for Snohomish County. Tune your radio to 1380 AM for localized alert information during major storms, disasters and other emergencies. We have backup systems in place to make sure we can remain on the air if problems arise.

What happens if there was an Amber Alert or a chemical accident or other event that required the activation of the EAS? For gods' sake, the Seattle area is in the vicinity of a few ACTIVE FUCKING VOLCANOES that when they go, will go like Mt. St. Helens! The residents of Snohomish county who would rely on potentailly lifesaving information would be royally FUCKED because you ELF dicks decided you wanted to make a little point based on what is, at best, junk science.

And there are people here who are applauding these idiotic ass cantaloupes?
