I wonder about this being Vietnam redux. There is the obvious parallel that many of us citizens are wondering why are we there. Furthermore the notion of America bringing democracy to anywhere is quite threadbare as an excuse for an occupation these days. I find myself in agreement with you, this is an insane war, one we should not be fighting.
Afghanistan is not our country and the Afghani citizens represent no threat to America. Whatever resources we are there for belong to those Afghani citizenry. At best we should only be there to support a rebuilding, replanting of this war torn country and for rendering medical aid to the needy. We should also return their citizens we hold in detention and reimburse them for what they are owed, per our signed agreement with the UN regarding torture.

4. Wasn't that a similar military situation for the Romans? |
|
My world-history is very fuzzy for this era and I've no further time to look/google this bit up but I seem to recall reading that near the ending of the Roman Empire, they too had more non-Romans than Romans garrisoning their posts. Didn't some of them actually turn on the Roman Army?

survived, that didn't overextend themselves, that weren't buried in a mountain of debt, in which the leaders did not become venal, corrupt, and self-serving? :D
