Local Schools Response To Obama Speech Request
Kern County Superintendent Of Schools Office To Tape Remarks And Make Available To Any Districts That Desire A Copy

UPDATED: 5:43 pm PDT September 4, 2009

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Ken Mettler has released this information regarding Obama's upcoming speech to the local schools.

The Republican Assembly of Kern County recommends that local school boards decline this highly intrusive Federal manipulation of our local school curriculums.

President Obama's speech request is of a last minute nature and there appears to be no pressing historic or time sensitive urgency.

Matters like this need the local school boards to deliberate in open public session and provide for the ability for our parents to opt in.

There are questions as to where this falls instructionally, especially with the advent of state standards and the requirement of instructional minutes. Normally, instructional materials are previewed before they are allowed in the classroom. This broadcast will disrupt the normal timeline of instruction.

The Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office will tape the remarks and make those available to any districts that desire a copy. The Republican Assembly encourages parents to discuss the President’s remarks with their children.

3. Well, it is Kern County.
It's quite a conservative area. I think 75% voted to ban gay marriage and LBJ was the last Democratic president to win the majority vote.

I drove up once or twice to pick up some shelter dogs and it's not my favorite place.

2. I wonder what the numbers would be . . .
. . . if Billy Graham wanted to address school kids to advise them to stay in school and work hard?

Or Pat Robertson?

5. I don't know if they understand, but a speech
by the president is not instructional material... it is a fucking speech by the fucking president telling kids to stay in fucking school.

And any teacher you ask will tell you that the first few days of school are completely unproductive anyways... kids don't transition that quickly from summer break.

7. When I went to school, it started the day after Labor Day.
I live in Houston now. They finished their second full week yesterday.

Moreover, I think teachers have had to submit their lesson plans by now, and almost certainly didn't take into account that Obama would decide to pre-empt instruction by a motivational speech.

No, I didn't like when Bush I decided to address students. I don't see that my reasons were especially partisan, either, or have changed much in 18 or so years. Record a speech for distribution? Sure, no problem.
