School districts opt not to cut superintendents' pay

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/lake/orl-bk-no-obama-in-lake-schools-090509,0,323211.story

Lake County School Superintendent Susan Moxley has banned broadcast of President Barack Obama's live nationwide address to schoolchildren on Tuesday. In an e-mail to principals and School Board members, Moxley said parents can find the video online and watch it at home with their children if they want.

In the e-mail, Moxley pointed to a district policy that says cooperation with federal agencies "shall not be at the expense of district level or local school programs." Moxley's memo stated: "Since schools are in the process of conducting diagnostic reading and baseline assessments and have structured schedules or current lesson plans, viewing the live broadcast would not be within the guidelines outlined in this policy and the bandwidth capacity of the district will not support both activities."...

It's the second Central Florida district to ban the president's address to students, in which he is expected to encourage children to stay in school and strive for achievement.

...

"It is a positive action that we are collectively focusing on the well-being of our students. If parents have concerns or questions, please contact your school principal."

19. Either I'm completely confused by your use of the word "eduction" or your email
just proves the need for education across the board.

23. No, it's NEVER a waste of time because silence implies consent
and we can't afford to allow these racist pigs to believe that their beliefs are "mainstream" and acceptable.

21. Osceola County is hardly a haven for good ole boys as indicated in one of
the replies. I'd venture to say that a good portion of the population is from other places.

Their school board site is here: It reads a bit differently than the word "banning" suggests.

22. I used to live in Osceola county
it's mostly hispanic immigrants and Disney employees, and it has a very active Democratic party membership. There is going to be a real outcry against the school boards obvious racism.

24. Indian River, too
Bunch of Redneck idiots. I live in St Lucie County and we make fun of the Indian River Rednecks all the time. The only reason to go there is to visit the Vero Outlets or go through it to get to Orlando (Yeehaw Junction tells the only story you need to know about the area).

25. Misleading headline
if you read the full article, he's not broadcasting it live because their bandwidth won't support that along with the scheduled assessments. But it's not banned from the classrooms as the headline (and thus the OP through selective quoting) imply.

The school is taping it, and it's not been banned from the classrooms.
