Palin resignation costs Alaska at least $40,000
$14,000 was for swearing-in ceremony; tab doesn't include special session

updated 4:46 p.m. PT, Fri., Sept . 4, 2009
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Early estimates put the cost of Sarah Palin’s midterm resignation as Alaska governor at a minimum of $40,000, not including a special legislative session partly linked to her departure.

The preliminary figures obtained by The Associated Press through a public records request show it cost the state almost $14,100 for the July 26 swearing-in ceremony of new Gov. Sean Parnell.

The price tag for moving Palin — the former GOP vice presidential candidate — and her family from the governor’s mansion in Juneau amounted to roughly $3,328.

Palin’s spokeswoman, Meghan Stapleton, says suggesting the resignation cost the state is “incredibly misleading.” She says the resignation ceremony was added to a previously scheduled governor’s picnic and was organized by the lieutenant governor’s office.

The tally doesn’t include the estimated $100,000 it cost for a one-day special session last month in which lawmakers approved Palin’s pick to replace Parnell as lieutenant governor and overrode her veto of federal stimulus funds intended for energy efficiency projects.

Gee, we haven't yet seen the cost of the fancy resignin' wardrobe.

1. Cheap at twice the price
I would have thought it would have cost far more.

Maybe she can pay the state back with her personal appearance revenues. She's all about doing what is right for the State of Alaska, is she not?

3. "Cheap" pretty much sums up the entire situation.

4. I'm truly happy for you, Blue. It must feel like the relief after an abscess drains.

12. Pretty much.
That's an accurate description. Sean Parnell, the new governor, is still a conservative, but at least he seems to be somewhat forthright and not batshit crazy. Hopefully we'll get a Dem in the governor's office next year.

5. That was an old-fashioned bargain, pure and simple.
Money well spent, IMHO.

6. It would have been cheaper still if the wolves had eaten her.

8. I'm guessing that nobody complains about the cost
THe savings to the state by getting rid of this leech for the next two years will be a hundred times greater.

10. Hmmmm....
Swearing-in ceremony of new Gov. Sean Parnell - $14,100.00

One-day special session to approve replacement - $100,000.00

Seeing Sarah and the Wasilla-hillbillies leave town - Priceless

11. If I'm not mistaken, there's still the matter of some investigations into ethical violations
that could up the cost. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen much about any findings one way or the other.

13. Sarah seems to have made herself pretty scarce,
but from what I've heard, Todd and at least Willow and Bristol are still in Alaska. There hasn't been an Alaska sighting of the Divine Miss P since the Bristol Bay nets-and-waders photo op as far as I know.
