The Unrec Feature. Either you love it or you hate it.
I don't know the details of any limitations, but would it be possible to make the rec/unrec feature available only if you have more than 100 posts?

I think it might eliminate a lot of the immediate 'unrec's a thread gets.

Now, unrec this in 3...2...1...

2. Or you ignore it.
It is relevant only if you make it relevant.

4. I've read countless threads on this site where somebody comments on
'why was this thread unrec'd?'.

12. I'm not sure I understand your point in reference to my comment.
I don't pay any attention to the whole issue - I have DU bookmarked to open on the "latest" page, not the main page, so I never even look at the "Greatest" list.

Why does something get 'unrec'd' or 'rec'd'? Beats me. Seems like most of it amounts to little more than a popularity contest . . .

I simply don't get the controversy, but it smells like ego.

3. That, and move "un rec." link away from "Rec." so there aren't any accidents.
I hit the wrong one once.

6. Maybe I'm the only member here who
never uses uses the rec/unrec feature. Far too often I see what I consider really dumb or self-serving threads on the front page, and so I'm often not very impressed by what shows up there.

8. Good idea
The way it works now is like an open invitation to trolls and not just a tool for Dem DUers to express a silent opinion.

9. I go for better use of the rec/unrec information.
For example, some threads get a lot of both, and end up with a number close to zero. I would favor a "Controversial" page where a zero attained by 100 recs and 100 unrecs shows up with a mathematically determined Controversial rating, but a zero attained by nobody rating it either way gets no notice.

10. This discussion is so last week
Or last month or whenever they first instituted it. I never use it. I had pretty much forgotten it was even there.

But as you point out a lot of people hate it. Then there are a few who are orgasmic over it.

You'll never get rid of trolls. They can fuck up a thread pretty good even if they don't unrecommend it.

11. Even a mention of unrec almost always results in a post being unrecced.
Like, say, this one.

19. Tere are a few who have stated it as their life mission to unrec any thread about unrec.
They're generally very, very small people.

You'll see them about. They're they really small people.

13. Too many people whine and cry when a new thread gets UnRecs,
feeding the trolls if they are the ones doing it. Threads deserving of Recs get plenty of them and the front page now is not cluttered with inane "rec this" threads.

By the way, I don't buy the love it or hate it about Rec/UnRec, but I would guess that you deliberately set up your thread so it would get UnRecs.

14. Each Unrecommend vote should require a written explanation.
The explanation would be 50-100 words, and explain why the poster has decided to Unrecommend the thread.

The explanation would be visible for all to see, and then each poster could Unrecommend a given post in the thread, but they would have to explain why they unrecommended it.

This would result in endless discussions about who hates whose puppy and why.

18. I dont always have popular opinions, but I try to write coherently. I don't have problems with unrec
I hated the idea of this feature when it came out. Really hated it.

But I've found that content that expresses and different perspective from the majority DU mainstream still gets respected most of the time when it is well written and thoughtful.

This is not always true, but it seems frequently true.

I don't have the most popular opinions sometimes but I find that when I make a real effort to express them in a clear, articulate, civilized manner with logic trumping emotion - I often end up on the greatest page, which surprises the shit out of me, frankly.

Not that its about that. But I think that DU respects good writing, even if there is disagreement about the opinion, more than I thought it might. So when I try to choose words carefully and really flesh out ideas, it seems to work out okay.

Now, the times when I'm up at 3am and ranting those usually go in the tank!
