I think in the very near future someone(individual or group) is going to capitalize on this schism in our politics.

( I don't think it's just the youth trending left, either.)

1. I think in the very near future someone(individual or group) is going to capitalize on this
We thought that was why Obama ran for President.

3. I think the Democratic Party itself is too bi-polar in nature.
It cannot accomodate comfortably the DINOS,the Blue Dogs and the Progressives. There is just not enough areas of overlap and that is becoming obvious more and more each day.

Dean tapped into this power base, but of course lost his bid for the primary. Obama tapped this power base, but it is unclear that either he or the Party will enjoy long-term staying power, particularly if most of the liberal/progressive/left side of the agenda is continually put off, minimized, or incrementalized.

2. It's not just the youth
People of all ages are to the left of both parties. We have a center right party and a far, far right party. Neither seems capable of or willing to read the issue polls to find out where the true center is and govern from it.

If at least one of them doesn't collectively wake up soon, all hell is going to break loose.

4. I don't know
The voters seem to revel in the messages of the two parties. We've known for at least ten years that the people when polled on issues alone tend to support progressive issues. Yet they consistently support/vote for right-far right candidates and policy. Until people stop voting their religious dogma and fears, particularly fear of change, I just don't think we're going to see either progressive reform or unrest. I'd like to believe otherwise, and maybe if things get bad enough it'll be different, but I've grown very cynical.
