A weak "Public Option" will be worse than no Public Option at all |
|
I think we need to consider this:
If we get a weak "public option" (Trigger or whatever), it could well set health care back far more than it helps. Industry (and the Republicans) would love to destroy all hope of a single payer option. And we have seen this strategy before: Allow a bill to pass that is so weak it can never really work. Then, when it flops you can claim it was never a sound idea, and just more "evidence" that government programs never work.
This feels way to much like a setup for failure. I would rather we just get some new regulations removing pre-existing condition exceptions., making ways to get the uninsured into the system, and forcing change in the way insurance is administered. I know that the for profit system will ultimately fail, but at least then we may have a chance that people will be ready for a single payer system in the near future, and we won't have a purposely distorted "public option" system to use as fodder to destroy any further efforts.

1. Yes, this sentiment has been posted every few hours for months now |
|
I think this is a rather obvious concept, though we're all waiting for the "small print" of the final bill.
I can guarantee you one thing - no more than 20% will be happy here no matter what passes.

2. Don't ya think we should wait to see what the final bills are |
|
before we disown the Dems? Right now we're dealing with proposals, possibles, and maybes. It's a few days until Obama's speech, and maybe 2 months until a final bill. At least wait until the speech!

4. When did I say anything about disowning the dems? |
|
I am not very happy with the party right now, but that is not what this OP was about.

5. A weak "reform" bill will simply enable the for-profit corporations to keep raping Americans |

A weak "reform" bill will simply enable the for-profit corporations to keep raping Americans for a few more decades.
But I don't think we can get what we really need (single-payer) without MASSIVE demonstrations coupled with a general strike.
