You mean that Newt Gingrich is SANE about something?

Who woulda thunk it?

Gingrich: Obama student speech "good for America"

Two top Republicans sided Sunday with President Barack Obama on his scheduled speech Tuesday to school children.

“I have been in communication with Arne Duncan and the team at Department of Education,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said on "Fox News Sunday." “I believe this is going to be posted. People are going to see it in advance. It is going be a totally positive speech. If that is what it is, it is good to have the president of the United States saying to young people across America stay in school and do your homework. It’s good for America.”

Senate Republican Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, a former education secretary under President George H.W. Bush, said: “Of course, the president of the United States should be able to address students.”

Parents and teachers should be able to choose whether to show the speech, Alexander said. But it is a good opportunity to give students a civics lessons, he said, and teachers should embrace the moment by showing clips of other presidents.

Newt knows a political mis-step when he sees one.

The GOP stepped in it this time.

4. He couldn't get through it without lying, though.
He mentioned Reagan's talk as if it had been apolitical, but Reagan couldn't resist plugging tax cuts and "free markets"

8. Gingrich wants the flaming nutjobs out of his party
as long as the nutjobs run the show Gingrich and the rest of the more libertarian wing of the party won't get a word in edgewise -- of course neither will the Democrats -- the media only cares about the circus sideshow.

11. Ironic, that, considering Newt helped make those nutjobs a force in his party...

9. Meanwhile, Newt is traveling around the USA telling people how bad public schools are for teaching
art and foreign languages... he said Spanish "is a ghetto language." :eyes: ¡pinche pendejo!

12. Well, not quite.
Was he condescending? Yes. Did he choose his words poorly? Yes--he's Newt.

But he did not, exactly, say that "Spanish is a ghetto language."

He was trying--and failing--to be a bit more nuanced than that.

Take it for what it's worth. He's still a moron, but this Newtism is being misquoted.

10. Gingrich is reasonably sane with education
He seems to understand the importance of education, and wants to offer cash rewards to kids who do good in school.

15. The RW has talked itself into a corner
after the speech, there will be desperate spin, cherry-picking, out of context editing, but it's just going to add more egg-to-face shame. It should have been apparent to all of them that this whole episode was a trap of their own creation, but oh my, the praise from the most whacked-out of the base is just to soothing when your party is dying. Newt is evil to the core, but professional enough to see how humiliating and damaging this really is.

The only possible spin that the right will have, is to claim that their attacks "Forced" Obama to remove what he "Really intended" to say.
