Several years ago, the Bakery and Confectionery Workers, of which I was a member at the time, stood with a local UFCW branch outside a wallyworld here in town passing out leaflets about how screwed up they were. We were asked to leave by the police who also said that as long as we didn't disrupt traffic, we could stand out on the shoulder of the road and continue leafletting. And that's what we did.

Coalition of University Employees, the clerical union, proudly run by the union members themselves. Our President and contract negotiators as well as the Stewards are all full time University clericals.

I have my doubts that we'll last much longer as the University of California corporatizes itself more and more. They're laying off entire administrative units and creating a centralized unit with a tiny fraction of employees and all the job titles are being changed so they don't reflect the titles the union has.

Still, I'm proud of my union because in the end it doesn't matter whether we win or lose as long as we fight the good fight.
