OK, I'm sorry, but I think this is stupid--bleeping a word in a John Lennon song on VH1.

OK, I'm sorry, but I think this is stupid--bleeping a word in a John Lennon song on VH1.
They're running a concert right now from 1972, and he's playing--well, I will censor my OWN phrasing of it, lest I get in trouble with the mods--"Woman Is the N***** of the World." And they are dropping out the N-word.

I don't know how anyone else feels about this, but I thought the whole point of the song was to say that sexism is as bad as racism, and that women have been treated as deplorably as have people of color around the world and throughout history. The word is being used not as a pejorative, but to make a point. To me, it's stupid to censor it.

Am I being too sensitive?

1. Context is king.
Unfortunately overly PC dipshits TOTALLY don't get context so the word has to be censored in every context to protect their feeble little minds.

4. Could be just a blanket policy of VH1 to censor that particular pair of consecutive syllables.
the whole point of the song was to say that sexism is as bad as racism, and that women have been treated as deplorably as have people of color

Some people are deeply offended when they encounter certain types of civil rights comparisons.

Am I being too sensitive?

I don't think so, but I don't think any word should be censored on TV.

14. I understand the offense, and I myself don't like to stage contests as to who has suffered most,
civil rightswise, but I honestly don't think Lennon came up with such a bad comparison there.

5. well, i've heard they censored it in the movie ROOTS!! lets take it out of huckleberry finn too...
i mean, I don't know about a john lennon song, but there are instances where they need to keep that word there.... it is part of the lexicon of the time period that is being exposed in these two vehicles. They do go crazy with the bleeping out of words... I find it funny when they will bleep out god in god damnit but keep in bitch, tits, pussy... and other words... but as long as they don't say god.

7. And let's not forget

you can say "ass"

and you can say "hole"

but you can't say "asshole"

What always makes me laugh is when they bleep out the word but you can clearly SEE what the word is by watching the person's mouth.

duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh why the hell do they bother?

:+

17. Context means nothing. PC is king.
Was this the movie? I don't recall offhand if that character was translated to the series. (I think there was a recurring African-American character in the first season, but he kind of disappeared afterward.)

11. Do they also censor the same word in gangsta rap?
If so, some of the most popular songs would have an awful lot of bleeping going on.

12. I was leafing though the TV listings a few years ago
(2006, I think) and noticed that The Family Channel was showing "Blazing Saddles" at a convenient time, so I figured well, this might be interesting and tuned in.
As I guessed, they cut out anything that could even remotely considered to be "swear words", or "offensive language", including "God" and even that most innocuous of the naughty words, "Hell".
What they did not cut out, though, were the words "nigger" and "faggot", which, if you've seen the movie, are repeated several times and could not have been just overlooked.
Which speaks volumes about the sensibilities of the Family Channel crowd, I suppose.

You take it as it is, or leave it.

I know there are a few words in there they might want to censor.
