The timing of Obama's education speech could be part of the
problem

Tomorrow is the first day of school for many kids.

As a mother, grandmother, and former teacher I know that this can be a rough day.

Perhaps a week later would have been better so that things would be more settled in the classroom.

That said,I think the speech is a great idea but the timing is a bit off for many educators and parents.

10. Its a problem. Not insurmountable but its still a problem. A date that is prior to most of
the school count dates or prior to the start of the federal and state mandated testing would be better.

7. For the whackjobs it probably makes no difference. For teachers, it makes a big difference.

4. For the RW, there would NEVER have been a good time for his speech
They would have complained if it was tomorrow, next week, or five months from now.

Besides, the school year is far from uniform from one state to the next anymore. It has already been underway for a couple of weeks in probably half the states.

5. Agree. I have to think this is partly a bad call by Duncan. The 1st day of school is always hairy.
And Duncan should know that. But of course, the staff will absorb yet another Federal initiative..:eyes:

16. It's not the first day of school for most children.
School started in some places the last week of August and August 31 in Maryland. It's the first day o school after the Labor Day Holiday. GA went to school a full two weeks ago. Listenig to the President after returning from vacation might calm everyone down.

14. This teacher would love to show it on our first day of school, since there isn't much
academic instruction that day but more of a going-over of procedures.

But 1. We've been in school for 2 weeks and 2. Our district has instructed us (in BOLD type in the email) to not show the speech.
