Mark Sanford's latest excuse: I Was Not Incommunicado
While much of the focus of South Carolina, P.M. (Post Maria) has centered around whether or not Gov. Mark Sanford broke the law with his various travel arrangements, the governor’s growing chorus of critics have recently returned to an argument that held considerable sway early on in the scandal.

It boils down to four words: “willful neglect of duty.”

Basically, this argument holds that when Sanford disappeared for a week earlier this summer to visit with his Argentine lover, Maria Belen Chapur (and lied about his whereabouts to his family, staff and state), he technically violated the South Carolina Constitution, which lists “willful neglect of duty” as an impeachable offense.
<snip>
Either way, in an apparent effort to preemptively counter the “willful neglect of duty” accusation, Sanford is now telling his confidants that his “secret” trip to Argentina wasn’t really such a secret after all.

Specifically, Sanford is now privately telling some of his closest allies that he actually informed several “state leaders” of his ill-fated June 2009 jaunt to Buenos Aires, Argentina – as well as his distinctly personal reasons for making the trip.
<snip>
We already know that the governor’s wife, Chief of Staff, then-spokesman and top law enforcement officer (who is responsible for providing his security) were unaware of Sanford’s location.

Who then, exactly, did he tell? That’s the best part of this story … Sanford’s not telling.

According to one of the sources we spoke with about this latest development, the governor is “holding off on disclosing the names because those people also knew why he was there.”

Trying to follow this idiot's reasoning will give you brainlock. He's pulled so much stuff out of his butt that he's given himself a high colonic.

4. I have no idea.
However in other news, he will be explain' and apologizin' again today:

Sanford will be on WVOC radio today from 5 to 6 p.m. and will take calls from the public.

It's bad enough he's traveling around. Now he's taking over radio. That will kill the drive time hour.

7.  Muh! They're probably the Coesines he told.
I would just looooooooooove for him to name some of those names. They have probably already sent an emissary to tell

him they will put out a hit if he breaths one syllable about them.

9. Sanford Daily
Governor Sanford makes comments on a daily basis that just digs the hole deeper for himself. If he had just made one statement and gone back to work then there would be far less chatter about his sexcapades. I, for one, am glad he continues to talk because I think there is still more to come out.

11. That was my thought
By the way, welcome to DU.

But yeah, if you have to issue daily proclamations to explain and revise and restate your excuses, remarks, alibis and other doings, it's a safe bet that the full truth hasn't come out, even yet. Sanford has neglected Molly Ivins' First Rule of Holes: When you find yourself in one, stop digging.

Sanford is moving from disgraceful to laughable and headed straight on toward pathetic. Maybe he's hoping that by becoming such a universally loathed creature, he can make his getaway when enough people turn away in disgust.

12. Thanks
Thanks for welcome message. I work for a marketing company doing the campaign for a new show on CBS called The Good Wife, which is based on a politician caught up in a sex scandal, and it's interesting how Governor Sanford and/or Eliot Spitzer can provide the story lines so to speak.

I live in Columbia, SC and the dominant discussion out in coffee shops, restaurants, etc is all about Sanford. It's a distraction for the state and it's going to be intriguing to see how it ends up. It's like we're all waiting to see what he's going to say next, because he can't and won't stop talking!!

13. Sure. Buck nekkid in bed with Maria, gettin' it on.
Maybe the cell phone was on the night table. Wouldn't you like to be the staffer that gets to call the Governor while he's "doin' it"?

"Er...sorry to bother you, sir, but we've got this problem here at the Capitol..."
