Here's my LTTE re the President's Speech today: Fear Mongering Benefits Who? |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 07:33 AM by rosesaylavee
Sent to the Chicago and northern suburban papers this am:
Fear Mongering Benefits Who?
Dear Friends and Neighbors and specifically those living in fear of this administration. Please take a moment and ask yourself if those who are promoting your fear are benefiting from this situation? How much money and influence are they acquiring? I hate to see good people duped. A good case in point to reflect upon is the recent fear mongering over the President’s speech to our school children. Did the speech reflect what you were told to expect? Was it substantially different from what Presidents Reagan and H.W. Bush said to our children? Our country IS as beautiful and brave and courageous as you hope it to be. Please open your eyes now and refuse to be duped by those who would use you for their own gains.
******************************************
I DO want the other side to hear what I have to say. I know I personally don't respond well to being called a nutjob which was my first inclination in writing a LTTE ... somehow I don't manage to hear anything past the name calling when confronted by someone opposed to my POV. :P I thought too that it may be news to whoever is reading this that I (and I think many others here) want to think of them as neighbors and friends (which I once did before the 2000 election) - and if I don't tell them here, how else would they know it?
Not sure what kind of reaction this will get... hopefully a mostly positive one. Eternal optimist that I am, I think there's always the chance that a few thoughtful people will read this and think 'hmmmm, maybe she's got a point'.

Will see if this has any effect... I would be embarrassed and this may help some save face.

I'm guessing that they're not going to like thinking of themselves as suckers either, even though it is the truth.

I like that you took a calm, rational approach. It's what is needed.
Fear is a curious thing. It's part of our brain's hard-wiring, of course. As such, it played an important part in our survival. It is good, for example, to have a fear of alligators if you are wading through swamps in some parts of the world. Yet, it is not beneficial to be paranoid about the dangers of alligators, if one is walking in a grocery store in most cities.
There are some people who capitalize on creating an atmosphere of fear, anxiety, and panic. If it benefits them, they will create a fear of alligators among shoppers in those cities. And that is really what we are dealing with today.

13. I decided about a month ago that I was done with any |
|
Republicans of our acquaintance. They were to be avoided at all costs. And mysteriously since I made that less than inclusive decision, I seem to keep running into rational, thoughtful and kind Republicans. So I know they exist and they are the ones I am hoping to make a connection with this LTTE. I also put this up on my Facebook page and set the viewership to 'everyone' so anyone who participates in that discussion technically will share it with their friends.
Facebook for me has been a very effective way of disseminating ideas and links from here to people who just don't feel comfortable with the DU rough and tumble. And I think/hope some will be motivated to write the newspapers and our school board (who provided alternatives to the speech today in our district) now that I have put myself out there.
And if it weren't for you Mr. Waterman and your drumbeat of 'LTTE's are the way', I don't know that I would have had the inclination to write this. So, really, thank YOU.

Not a problem. (Ok, I just made that up. hehe.)
I get the same way - just thought this one was commonly known. And snappish? You will have to go much further than that to pierce my DU thickened hide. :P
