5. Not short for his day. Theodore R was 5'8" so, Eleanor was nearly a head taller
when he walked her down the aisle.

11. The average in Colonial days was decidedly shrimpy
Most male visitors to the Paul Revere house have to keep their heads on sideways because the ceilings are so low.

I've always wanted to open a chiropractic office next door.

17. Can you believe how small that thing was?
Marinas are filled with yachts that are bigger.

Those people were brave to the point of being foolhardy!

23. I think you have president Teddy R. and his wife mixed up.
Eleanor was Franklin D's wife. Don't know who Teddy's wife was, never hear anything about her.

25. Ted was Eleanor' s uncle and 'gave her away' at her wedding. His wife was Edith Kermit.
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 01:39 PM by Captain Hilts
Eleanor got her height from her mother's side, so she was four inches taller than Ted.

The social pages noted that the head of the bride was a head higher than the head of the head of state.

9. Yup, it's kind of an urban legend
First, the British depicted him as a tiny man for obvious propaganda reasons. Second, his nickname, "le petit caporal" was taken to mean "little" - it was actually a friendly reference from his troops regarding how "soft" he was towards them. And lastly, his personal guards were large men for the time, so he was usually seen in the company of people who were a head or two taller than him. Also, the guy who beat him at Waterloo was practically a giant at the time - nearly six and a half feet tall.

18. The most elite and "to have around" troops were the Grenadiers. Grenadiers HAD to be big.
They needed long muscly arms and the backs to hurl those primitive grenades en masse. They also often put big hats on them too to make them look even bigger for intimidation purposes.

Napoleon was notoriously nice to his men: "Soldiers usually win the battles and generals get the credit for them." Kind of unheard of in the aristocratic time to give such credit to the infantry.

Yes, we prefer taller leaders.

Yes, taller folks earn more.

We are trained as small children to respect those taller than we are and we never get over it.

20. Frank Lloyd Wright had the opposite reaction.
Being a smaller man himself...he picked on taller folks.

Being 5'6" I can honestly say that it's kind of a shame it never caught on...

Not that it really matters, it's just interesting how some people look taller or shorter than they are.
