8 US Troops Die in Iraq, Afghanistan Attacks
Source: Irish Times

Eight US soldiers were killed in attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan today in the deadliest day for American troops in weeks.

The first bomb struck a patrol in southern Baghdad, killing one soldier. A short time later another targeting a patrol in northern Iraq killed three soldiers.

The US military, which pulled back from populated areas of Iraq before the end of June, has suffered fewer casualties in recent weeks. In August, seven US troops died — the lowest monthly toll since the war began in March 2003.

Today marked the deadliest day for US forces since June 29th, when four soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in Baghdad.

In all, at least 4,343 US service members have died since the war started in March 2003.

Meanwhile in Afghanistan another four US troops were killed in an attack in the province of Kunar.

Fifty-one US troops died in Afghanistan in August, making it the deadliest month for American forces in the deadliest year since the invasion in late 2001. The latest deaths bring to 11 the number of US service members killed so far in September.

The deaths came the same day a Taliban car bomber attacked an international convoy near the entrance to the military airport in Kabul killing three Afghan civilians.

1. ... and the impersonal death count continues. No names. Just a number.

2. They are names to the mourning families.
The wars produce grieving spouses, parents and children across the country. For most of the people in this country, not a thought is given to even the number, much less the names.

3. The number of casualties still seeping out of the ME are way too low for America to pay attention.
That, added to the reluctance of most of the anti-war people from Bushie's reign to say a bad word about the Democratic President, lead me to conclude that we really don't give a damn.

I know that nothing gets done in terms of US policy until enough or "the right" feathers get ruffled by any issue. IF death numbers approached those of Vietnam, there would be more outcry. But as long as the price is paid by so few, there is less impetus for change.

5. At least there are death counts for Americans.
I want to know how many dead and injured Afghanis and Pakistanis and Iraqis there are.

Just sayin'.
