Dog-Torturing, Ex-Con Black Man Addresses HS Kids On First Day of School - No Outrage
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 04:03 PM by stopbush
Let's see: Harvard-educated, clean-as-a-whistle Obama wants to talk to kids, and the RW goes nuts.

A QB convicted of torturing dogs and who served prison time addresses HS kids, no es problemo.

Go figure...

Could it be: Obama has nothing criminal in his past, and the RW is obsessed with all blacks being criminals, so a non-criminal black just can't be tolerated as a role model for the white kids, while Michael Vick fits their stereotype to a tee (ie: a black man can talk to kids but only as an exercise in begging for forgiveness for how horrible males of his race are)?

Vick to Philly students: Resist following crowd
‘My future was promising ... at some point, I got sidetracked,’ Eagle QB says

Michael Vick, speaking to a group of Philadelphia high school students Tuesday, warned against the dangers of peer pressure and offered himself as a cautionary tale of what can happen when someone is a follower instead of a leader.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, who served prison time for running a dogfighting ring, addressed a rapt audience of 200 freshmen on their first day at Nueva Esperanza Academy, a North Philadelphia charter school. He urged the students to make the right choices and to resist the temptation to follow the crowd.

“I didn’t choose to go the right way, which led to 18 months in prison, which was the toughest time of my life,” he said. “Being away from my family, being away from my kids who I adore dearly, and being away from the game of football, doing something so foolish, and I wish I could take it all back."

16. "Any" Criticism of the President Is Racist?
So, if I point out that Obama has demonstrated a beyond-shitty lack of committment to gay people, I'm a racist?

4. How weird is that? They're too busy raging on
President Obama.

And, I don't mind Vick's rehabilitation speech..some people can change and they should be good lessons to keep others from doing from they did.

Obama had a part in his speech where he said he didn't always do as well as he should have.

7. I'm pretty sure
republicans don't care what happens at a school in North Philly. I might even go so far as to say, that right-wingers probably wouldn't care if the majority of those 200 freshman students end up in prison themselves.

8. So, Instead of Vick Teaching HS Children Where He Went Wrong, You'd Rather He Be Ostracized?
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 05:23 PM by Toasterlad
Congratulations. I was not happy that Vick was playing for Philly, and I was sympathetic to those who didn't feel he deserved another chance. But your post - which is just as illogical as anyone protesting Obama speaking to school children - has tipped me over the other way.

Thank you, Michael Vick, for using your personal experience to show kids how to stay on the right path.

11. No, I'm pointing out the hypocrisy of the RWers who rail at Obama
while ignoring Vick.

I'm OK with both Obama and - to some extent - Vick appearing in front of school kids with a positive message. I wouldn't be surprised if Vick's appearance had to do with meeting a requirement of his being released from prison.

14. I'm Quite Sure That Vick Speaking to Students Is a Condition of His Parole
or his contract with the Eagles, or both. That doesn't mean that kids can't benefit from it.

17. I don't want to bicker with anyone here
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 06:49 PM by MtnLovinLiberal
Some folks defend Michael Vick since he's served his term and has 'reformed', but you know Virginia Tech fired his brother for the personal foul of stepping on another player's hand in a game. That kind of cruel disregard for pain in another living creature, animal or person, has its basis in a person's sensitivity level and upbringing. The Vick family seems to have their share of insensitivity. I know how how much sensitivity training Michael Vick has gone through, but I think anyone capable of such abuse needs a few years of intense therapy and not just a prison term. We demand it if they abuse another person.

I think there is a huge double standard here because Michael Vick does not represent 'socialism'---a far greater crime than any abuse (do I need a sarcasm icon here?).

Add the fact that the racists do not want their children having any respect for a black man with the power of the presidency and you've got all bases covered. I'm sure they've never let their children listen to the Pres. Obama on tv before.

That's the gist of it.
