American Vice: Mapping the 7 Deadly Sins
Edited on Tue Sep-08-09 04:18 PM by Ian David
We're gluttons for infographics, and a team at Kansas State just served up a feast: maps of sin created by plotting per-capita stats on things like theft (envy) and STDs (lust). Christian clergy, likely noting the Bible Belt's status as Wrath Central, question the "science." Valid point—or maybe it's just the pride talking.

<snip>

Wrath
Number of violent crimes (murder, assault, and rape) per capita.

Lust
Number of STD cases reported per capita.

Sloth
Expenditures on art, entertainment, and recreation compared with employment.

2. Looks like a weather map
If you look at Pride (the composite of the other 6), you notice all the sin is where the weather is warm. I guess you can't sin in the upper Midwest with all the blizzards they have there.

7. I notice the South leads in every category but greed
Probably because greed implies ambition, and the damn southerners are lazy and unambitious.

10. Is NJ "the south" now? SD? SF?
Most of TX isn't as dark as most of the southeast, so I guess we're not 'the south' now.

Hey, maybe I'll join in with the bashing!

18. Fascinating
What would be interesting is how these map with poverty levels because the greatest indicator of crime has always been levels of poverty. If that ties into other social ills as well, it tells us something important about society.
