Warrior in the past, apathetic today... |
|
Ran into an old friend today. A guy I knew in college, he and I both spent time working on the first Clinton campaign. Back then he was very passionate about things political, but today he is anything but.
He told me he bailed on politics years ago, likening it to corporate marketing wars.
In his words - the best I can recall - for four hours each night on several television stations, people argue the same points about the same topic du jour in almost the same words. The winners are the ones who come up with slickest buzzword or the most 'comfortably joinable' movement. It's all about marketing, not about substance. I started paying cash for everything years ago. I do the best I can to take care of my family and loved ones. I will live and I will die and when I do, my death is not going to matter in the grand scheme of things, much like my involvement in the political process is not going to matter. It is no longer worth my time or the added stress.
I really didn't know what to say and instead kinda nodded and started talking about baseball.

1. Your friend has a point |

and he isn't the only person to lose interest, not so much in the issues, but in the fight over the issues. Sometimes I feel like giving up but after the last eight years that would be a HUGE EFFIN' SHAME.

2. I'm sure I left something out... |

I couldn't recall all he said, that was what I remembered off the top of my head.
It's a shame to see someone who was once so connected and interested say to hell with it and drop out.
