LI (NY) schoolkids cheer Obama's speech
From NEWSDAY:

"Where you are right now doesn't have to determine where you'll end up. No one's written your destiny for you," Obama said. "Here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future."
Madisen Felix, 7, said she believed the president when he said students can do anything if they believe in it. "I want to help children who are sick," Madisen said. "I want to be a doctor."
Some of the 56 Long Island school districts open Tuesday broadcast the speech, while others taped it for later use.

At Drexel Avenue Elementary in Westbury, cooks turned out hamburgers, hot dogs and macaroni salad at warp speed so some 250 third- and fourth-graders could finish lunch and be in the auditorium by noon to listen to the speech.

When Obama's image appeared on a movie screen, children broke into spontaneous applause and whoops of delight. Fourth-graders said they found the speech inspiring.

"The message I picked up was when he said to never give up and keep on trying," said Nicholas Vasquez, 9. "So I'm going to keep on trying.

1. good for Obama, wonderful for the kids
some kids' destinies are changed simply because SOMEONE believes in them - and yes, it does not have to be a family member or close friend - a PRESIDENT will do

4. I still remember the teacher who believed in me.

I didn't have the most stable home life at the time and her support meant the world to me. I cried the last day of school.

Mrs. Hicks, that was her name.

Maybe I'll dedicate the PhD thesis I'm writing to her.
