Here is the email I will send to the Superintendent of my sons school who refused to let Obama
show his speech to my son, without notifying me of that decision beforehand.

I will send this tomorrow, after I've slept on it.

At this school you have a D.A.R.E. program. You teach our children not to give into peer pressure to take drugs, to dare to stand up for their principles and do what is right, no matter if all their friends pressure them into doing what is wrong.

You teach them to ignore pressure from others to steer them in the wrong direction.
As educators, you pat yourselves on the back for this good work. And it IS good work. It is just a shame you seem to have forgotten to teach yourselves the same lessons.

Recently, this school refused to allow my son to see a speech directed at him by the President of the United States of America. Let that sink in a bit: you silenced the highest elected official in this country.

And why did you do this? Because you allowed yourself to give in to pressure from your friends, just like you teach our children NOT to do. You did not DARE to be stronger than pressure, you did not DARE to be open in your decision making, you did not DARE to allow other parents, like me, to have a say in your decision. You gave into pressure, into the temptation, of the drug of telling the president “no”.

How many parents pressured you? I don’t have those numbers. I DO know I was not notified of your decision through any note or permission slip. I DO know I was not given the same level of access to your decision as these other parents that pressured you. Am I not a parent? Isn’t my child a student here? When did you consult me?

Oh that’s right. You did not. Instead, you let the pressure of a select, secretive group make that decision for my child and you took that decision away from me without asking.

You are educators. Let’s recap what you just taught our children:

-- You taught them you do not trust the President of the United States, because some parents pressured you not to.
-- You taught them its ok to make prejudicial judgments of things and people without enough information.
-- You taught them at the first sign of pressure, its ok to cave in and abandon your principles.
-- You taught them that you value some select parents over the rest of the parents, merely because they match your politics, or they throw louder tantrums. And further, that you will do so secretly, in the dark of the night, so that no one else can have a voice.
-- You taught them that you, as their mentors, believe that their care and their education is less important to them than how you are perceived by others.
-- You taught them that adults can be hypocritical, that they can teach you do brave things that they themselves do not have the temerity to even attempt.

And why did you cave to this pressure? Since the president’s speech was to tell kids to stay in school, study hard and make themselves a success… we KNOW the content of the speech was not being objected to, not honestly anyway.

What possible reason would there have been that you were pressured to silence the President of the United States? I can think of only a few real reasons, and being “controversial” is not a real reason:

1. Partisan political pressure
2. Anti government pressure or Anti American pressure (you are, after all, blocking the President of the United States from talking to our kids)
3. An African American President.

If there is another reason, please explain what it could be.

As you go to bed tonight, put on your jammies, kiss your own children, your wives, your husbands… I want you to think about this:

You did not DARE to stand up to pressure. You took the drug. You listened to the dealer in the schoolyard. You lit up and you got high on the arrogance of thinking that its ok to show kids not to respect the President of the United States. You got the buzz of placating the complainers in order to be more popular. You mainlined on abandoning reasoned debate and replacing it with naked prejudice.

And then the next day, when you talk to MY kid, who waited all week to hear the president speak to HIM and was denied the historic and educational opportunity to be inspired to succeed, and you try to tell him to DARE to say no to drugs, I want you to know in your heart what a hypocrite you are.

And, in the future, I want the SAME access to your decision making as the ones throwing private secret tantrums. I can make my points without making threats. Isn’t that what you teach our children?

Sincerely,

Lerkfish(I will use my real name here), a true American who respects the office of the President of the United States, like I was taught as a child, in my school, by my school board, and my principals, and my teachers. It’s a shame my son will not have the same high level of education.

19. ok, here is how I reworked it this morning, after sleeping on it.
Sept. 9, 2009

To:
xxxx Superintendent of Schools, xxxx School District
xxxx, Principal of xxx Elementary:

At this school you have a D.A.R.E. program. You teach our children not to give in to peer pressure to take drugs, to dare to stand up for their principles and do what is right, no matter if all their friends pressure them into doing what is wrong.

You teach them to ignore the pressure from others to steer them in the wrong direction. As educators, you pat yourselves on the back for this good work. And it IS good work.

It is just a shame you seem to have forgotten to teach yourselves the same lessons.

Recently, this school did not allow my son to see a speech directed to him and other students by the President of the United States of America. Let that sink in a bit: you silenced the highest elected official in this country.

And why did you do this? Because you allowed yourself to give in to pressure from your friends, just like you teach our children NOT to do. You did not DARE to be stronger than pressure, you did not DARE to be open in your decision making process, you did not DARE to allow other parents, like me, to have a say in your decision. You gave in to pressure, in to the temptation, of the drug of telling the president “no”.

How many parents pressured you? I don’t have those numbers. I DO know I was not notified of your decision through any note or permission slip. I DO know I was not given the same level of access to your decision as these other parents that pressured you. Am I not a parent? Isn’t my child a student here? When did you consult me?

You did not. Instead, you let the pressure of a select, secretive group make that decision for my child and you took the right of that decision away from me without asking.

You are paid to be educators. Let’s recap what you have just taught our children:

-- You taught them you do not trust the President of the United States, because some parents pressured you not to.
-- You taught them its ok to make prejudicial judgments of things and people without enough information.
-- You taught them at the first sign of pressure, its ok to cave in and abandon your principles.
-- You taught them that you value some parents over other parents, merely because they possibly match your politics, or they throw louder tantrums, or you are afraid of them. You taught them that bullying is an acceptable form of behavior.
-- You taught them that you, as their mentors, believe that their education or opportunity to succeed is less important to you than how you are perceived by others.
-- You taught them that adults are often hypocritical, that they will tell a child to do braver things than they themselves have the temerity to even attempt.

Why did you cave to this pressure? Since the president’s speech was to tell kids to stay in school, study hard and make themselves a success… we KNOW the content of the speech was not objectionable. So what was the real reason?

1. Being intimidated by partisan political pressure? – cowardice?
2. Promoting ignorance and baseless slander against the president? – anti-American?
3. The fact that we have an African American President? – racism?

If there is another rational reason, please explain what it could be.

As you go to bed tonight, kiss your own children, your wives, your husbands… I want you to think about this:

As educators, you did not DARE to stand up to pressure. You took the “drug”. You listened to the dealer in the schoolyard. You lit up and you got high on the arrogance of thinking that it’s ok to show kids how not to respect the President of the United States. You got a buzz from placating the complainers in order to be more popular. You mainlined on abandoning reasoned and fair debate and replacing it with naked, unapologetic prejudice.

Where is your courage, your standards, your principles? What, exactly, are you teaching our kids?

In the future, I want the SAME and EQUAL access to your decision making process as you accorded the ones throwing private secret tantrums. I can make my points without making threats. Isn’t that what you should be teaching our children?

Sincerely,

xxxxx
A true American who respects the office of the President of the United States, like I was taught as a child by my school board, my principals, and my teachers. It’s a shame my son will not receive the same high level of civic education.

20. UPDATE! important UPDATE!
So, I walked in to the school office just a few minutes ago, with my letter in hand, and for some reason I thought to doublecheck before I went in to talk to the Principal.

apparently, between yesterday and this morning, things had changed (!?!).
--I"m going to tell my wife she must have had something to do with it, or enough other parents pinned the principal in the corner after last nights meeting.... but at any rate.

Even though its not perfect, they are NOW going to allow kids to view the address. They taped it yesterday (they only have one copy, natch). and it will be up to the teacher individually (and I thought sure, right), but in fact one class was already viewing it this morning, and I will be sent a permission slip when my son's class views it.

So, I'm glad they ticked me off enough to craft the letter, because I'm proud of it, but it appears they either had second thoughts, or someone with a law degree on the school board suddenly realized they were being idiots, or they were already getting backlash, or someone watched msnbc and realized it was a mistake.

its a bit anticlimactic, I know, but I'm glad the kids will at least (supposedly) still get to see it.

of course, if they don't live up to this current stand, I WILL send the letter anyways.

thanks everyone for your recs! Anyone in the country whose school is refusing to show it, though, you have my permission to use this letter entirely or in part.

21. Make note of that so the same criteria is used in the future
Next time a republican is President (it hurts my brain to even think that) the teachers MUST have the same right to choose if they want to show it or not. I'd also push the school board to do something official, like draft a policy with specifics about no dictates from above.

26. Don't count on it
You know that won't happen because all those officials that were adamant about not showing Obama's speech will suddenly have an epiphany as to how wrong that was and that it is really important for their students to be exposed to what a great man the President of the United States is. Also, they will be glad to let you know that they didn't receive one call, email or other notification that anybody objected to the Republican President giving a speech to the kids.

33. Your letter still applies, Lerkfish, because you have to "sign a permission slip"
& because the school delayed showing the speech & because the school has lessened the opportunity for all the kids to see it (the decision to show it is left up to the individual teachers & there is only one tape available), which suggests that Obama can't be trusted. Worse, it's showing disrespect for the office of the presidency.

I'm glad you're sending the letter anyway. It's very appropriate, given the school's awkward remedy.

It is fantastic!!

As a former school Administrator, here is my only concern....

I don't know the dynamics of your school district/local school but I would not want your child to have any problems from any teachers, students or parents because of your letter.

If that happened goclark would have to go with you to the next School Board Meeting and give them some of my selected thoughts!

PS/ I feel better in knowing that the Supt."changed his mind" after he had a few meetings with the district lawyers.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall for those little talks!

Bet those meetings are happening all over the nation.

If fact, there is recorded evidence that other Presidents have talked to students, why not President Obama?

ACLU? NAACP?

Best wishes ~ You DAREd to make a difference!

In your second-to last paragraph, you might want to clarify how you want the same access, which would be to have all correspondence on such matters be forwarded to you.

45. Bush was not "talking to the kids"...
He was trying to follow along, to keep up, while a child was reading "My Pet Goat"...

While the chickens, the ones he and cheney and rice were warned about, the ones the USAmerikan Empire made and paid for, came home to roost...

While the chickens were supplied with cheney's support during and after the fact in the alleged assault on the towers, pentagon and field in Pennsylvania...

And then the lies continued...

That bush?

49. You might not .......
want to send that email until your kid is no longer a student at that school.
If you don't know who you are dealing with or if you do not know, at this point, why your son was prohibited from hearing the president speak, assume the worst motives you can imagine. In the case where America's first African-American president, as have other presidents, wants to encourage students to stay in school and do their best, racism and homophobia have taken the top spots on the list of reasons misbegotten homophobes don't want this to happen.

We live in an age where a little paranoia can be a good thing. Go about finding out what you need to know quietly and if not paranoia is not needed, let it go for now. Resurrect it during those times when your rights, or the rights of your loved ones, appear to be in danger.
