Who am I?
Former Governor of Texas

One of the most corrupt governorships in Texas history.

Utilized martial law and police methods to enforce his decrees.

Administration characterized by extravagant public spending, property tax increases to the point of confiscation, gifts of public funds to private interests, intimidation of newspaper editors, and control of voter registration by the military.

Made hundreds of appointments to various state and local offices.

27. Gotta winner!
Congratulations! You know your Texas history.

Now the rest of the story. Republicans still haven't changed much from the 1873 election!

He refused to leave office when he lost the election. Governor-elect Coke and and Democratic lawmakers are said to have climbed ladders to the second story of the Capitol building where the legislature met. President Grant refused to send troops to help Davis, so left under protest but he locked the office and kept the key!
Governor Coke had to use an axe to open the door to the office.
That same year, Democrats took control of state courts from the Republicans and proceeded to re-write the Texas Constitution!
Can you imagine what GWB would have done if they hadn't curtailed his predecessor?:scared:

34. Well, he was a UNION general and when he returned to Texas after the civil war
he started the Texas State Police... which hired African Americans to enforce the law.

He was part of the reconstruction South. He ran as a "Radical Republican" and won office in a very controversial election.
