Chernobyl Journal: HDR Photo Journey to the Zone of Exclusion
Chernobyl Journal: HDR Photo Journey to the Zone of Exclusion
It was exactly 01:23:45 AM (UTC+3) on 26 April 1986 when reactor #4 at the Chernobyl plant, near Pripyat in the former U.S.S.R., exploded and sparked a chain reaction ending up with what we know today as the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history. A huge plume of highly radioactive fallout, 400 times more than during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima (Wikipedia), was exploded into the atmosphere and over an extensive geographical area. But 23 years later, for Swiss decay photographer Timm Suess the Chernobyl ground-zero is also the stuff dreams are made of. At least his dreams.

1. Those are great pics, I find Chernobyl and surrounding areas completely surreal...
The pics of the maladies that befell the people are stunningly in-your-face stuff - can't post them here

3. The HDR-ness adds to the surreal feeling too, IMO
Even ignoring the actual disaster, there's something vaguely creepy about shots of the area today, something not right or natural; the effect in the pictures amplifies that a bit to me.

10. Oh yeah, suppose the HDR is meant to lift all the disruptive confusion & deformity...
to a level of art not unlike people having stared mesmerized into the battlefield pics of Matthew Brady minus the dead people of course

8. I traveled to Chernobyl last year when I was in Kiev.
It was an amazing journey. A little pricey, but worth it.

11. Is it true what they say about the silence there?
I've heard a few times that people find trips to Chernobyl unnerving because it's so unnaturally quiet in the area around the site.
