Army Accidentally Grows Pot In Colorado

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS) ― The Army has made an unusual and unwanted discovery at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal northeast of Commerce City. The Army is in charge of cleaning up the arsenal. Part of the cleanup includes reseeding some areas. When that seed started to grow, marijuana popped up.

It isn't commercial grade, but it's still an illegal drug. It's called ditch weed or feral hemp, the kind that grows in the wild in some places.

Charlie Scharmin with the U.S. Army is in charge of the cleanup. Needless to say, he was quite surprised when he was told marijuana was growing at the arsenal.

"Not something you expect in an environmental cleanup job," says Scharmin. "It was a little surprising."

Scharmin says they were finishing containment of two large contamination areas at the former chemical weapons production site. He says they layed down rock and clay then put vegetation on top. But it wasn't just any vegetation.

"The specification is that we acquire weed-free mulch from the supplier," explains Scharmin.

The Army blames the supplier for the snafu. It says it bought the mulch for its ground cover from a place in Kansas where the low-grade weed is common. Some of it apparently got mixed in with the grass.

7. Ditch weed is NASTY
Many moons ago, a friend of mine drove from Chicago to California, and did a lot of roadside camping to save money. He found a bunch of these things near a rest stop in Nebraska, brought them back to California, dried them, and we tried to smoke it.

It was the harshest thing we'd ever smoked (our throats burned), tasted like crap, the buzz was almost nonexistent, and we all ended up with dizziness and headaches. It was the worst crap I'd ever smoked.

11. I think everyone makes that mistake once in their lives.
I did, when I was 14. :)

Pot needs to be mature before harvest, and it needs to be genetically selected for high cannabinoid levels.

Ditchweed is usually pure hemp, which is bred for maximum fiber.

3. A private citizen would be locked up for that.
It wouldn't matter how or why it came to be growing on his property, it wouldn't matter that it was accidental.

9. "Bummer, dudes. The Sarge found our stash."
"And he burned and he dug and he dug and he burned. Well, he killed all of our cute little plants. Then he drove away. We just smiled and waved, sittin' there on that sack o' seeds. Ya'll come back now, ya hear?"
