Florida utilities want money for nuclear plants

The Florida Public Service Commission has begun hearings on requests for special rate increases to pay for new nuclear power plants amid internal turmoil.

That includes the firing of one top aide and suspension of another for alleged ethical lapses.

Florida Power & Light asked the panel Tuesday to increase its nuclear cost recovery rate by 67 cents per month for a typical customer using 1,000 kilowatts of power

Progress Energy Florida wants an increase of $2.38 for the same monthly consumption.

2. If the oversight of the money and construction were properly regulated, YES.
Profits on electric companies' output is remarkably small (sorry, I'm in business class, and in 2008 values, I was floored by the small profit margin, via the activity ratio presented.

As long as they remain non-privatized, where profits would skyrocket to the expense of the WHOLE of the economy (no electricity = no ability to create or do, hell, anything), I have NO qualms with government money going into improving the electric utilities.

Even in Florida, land of nutters.

4. the taxpayers will have to pay the insurance on the nuke plant.
the projected cost of construction is a conservative 10 billion. construction time is between 5-10yrs.there`s only one forge in the world that makes the containment vessel and it has a backlog of over two-three years. the over all cost of just buildinhg one plant is from 10 to over 15 billion.most of the bits and pieces will be purchased from overseas suppliers--we no longer have the tooling to make the bits and pieces.
they are not going to be built.
