Mexico is outraged over influx of its own citizens
Mexico is outraged over influx of its own citizens

The shoe is on the other foot, and the Mexicans from Sonora don't like it one bit. Can you believe the nerve of these people? It's almost funny.

The state of Sonora is angry at the influx of Mexicans into Mexico. Nine state legislators from the state of Sonora traveled to Tucson to complain about Arizona's new employer crackdown on illegal immigrants from Mexico.Â

It seems that many illegal immigrants from Mexico are returning to their hometowns, and the officials in the Sonora state government are ticked off about it. A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson recently to say Arizona's new employer sanctions law will have a devastating effect on the Mexican state. At a news conference the legislators said Sonora, Arizona's southern neighbor comprised mostly of small towns, cannot handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools it will face as Mexican workers here return to their country without jobs or money.

The Arizona law, which took effect Jan. 1, punishes employers who knowingly hire individuals who don't have valid legal documents to work in the United States. Penalties include suspension or loss of business licenses. Because more companies are complying, illegal immigrants are finding it more difficult to find work, so they are going home.

(The above was posted today there, dug around and found this from Jan.)

Sonoran officials slam sanctions law in Tucson visit

"Mexico is not prepared for this, for the tremendous problems" it will face as more and more Mexicans working in Arizona and sending money to their families return to hometowns in Sonora without jobs, she said.

"We are one family, socially and economically," she said of the people of Sonora and Arizona.

Amparano said the Mexican legislators are already asking the federal government of Mexico for help for Sonora.

1. More than that, what they really miss is the money the
illegals were sending back to Mexico. It was a major underpinning of the Mexican economy, along with tourism, drug trafficking, and oil export. And with the increase in drug violence, tourism is on the skids as well, and as for oil... it's falling off a cliff like a diver in Acapulco.

6. Welcome to the global economic crisis.
I think that this returning tide of their own citizens is due more in part to the economic downturn in the US than AZ laws(though I'm sure that has some effect). No spending, no new jobs, so the people from Mexico go home, it's that simple.

I also understand that the money that Mexican workers in the US send home is drying up too, and it's like the second, third or fourth largest component in Mexico's economy.

I can't say as though I have much sympathy for the Mexican government or the Mexican people. After all, it's not like they haven't sucked good jobs away from Americans and now they can't go to that well anymore. That's what happens when you kill your host, you die too.

Hopefully this will prompt the Mexican government to bolster it's own economy instead of continuing to try and feed off of ours.

7. They could build their own houses and schools
Their citizens have spent plenty of time building up the US; now that they have experience, they can work building up Mexico. Of course the federal government isn't going to be much help as long as Calderon is wasting space there.

13. Maybe I can stop hearing about how it's all "the illegals fault"
now that there aren't anymore. Arizona might have to start funding basic public education again.

19. Well, maybe they should have made a serious attempt at providing jobs
for their people instead of depending on another country to provide them.
