However, something more important than his likes is at stake; he's now going to war with the Congress he has, rather than with the Congress he might like. Congress isn't going to be pooping ponies this year, so the president has quite rightly focused on the achievable. He's conceding that single-payer won't get out of committee, much less reach his desk.

He's mainly trying to dismantle the FUD propagated by the Right.
