In case you're naive like me, DON'T let your GPS in your car when you leave it.
A friend just sent this to me. I thanked her, and decided to post it for all of you in the event you might say like I did..."Ohhh, I never thought of that!

A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had
their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was
parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and
specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included
a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been
prominently mounted on the dashboard.
When the victims got home, they found that their house had been
ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen.
The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then
used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain
entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football
game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so
they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would
appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.

SOMETHING TO CONSIDER IF YOU HAVE A GPS - DON'T PUT YOUR HOME ADDRESS IN IT. PUT A NEARBY ADDRESS (LIKE A STORE OR GAS STATION) SO YOU CAN STILL FIND YOUR WAY HOME IF YOU NEED TO, BUT NO ONE ELSE WOULD KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE IF YOUR GPS WERE STOLEN

2. You must not have ever moved to another State, or gone to
buy something from a Craig's List posting, and although it's not more than 40 miles from your home, you've never been there and some places are so complex, it many not be impossible to find your way home, but sure is a heck of a lot easier!

14. Sure, but ypu've just made it easier! They don't even have to
know where that street is! Just press a button and go. Remember, few criminals are smart!

16. Better yet, just don't leave the GPS prominently in view when not in the car
Edited on Wed Sep-09-09 11:30 PM by fujiyama
I had my car stereo stolen this way. Not really the greatest that too, but it was an aftermarket and I wish like hell I'd taken the front off.

It's an age old lesson. Don't leave your valuables in full site even for a minute. Hell, another time when I had stuff stolen, I had left the car for ten minutes when moving things.

This story may or may not be bullshit, but it's a warning worth heeding some of the advice anyways.

18. Some GPSs have a "HOME" location
If you are in the middle of the boonies, hitting that one helps.

Good idea, I will put the address to the nearest police station instead LOL.

The garage door opener in my Volvo is embedded in my sun visor. I guess they could then jerry rig it to a battery and get it to work.
