Do Insurance companies sell policies to illegals? |
|
I know they sell policies that pay for abortions. I also know the government plans do neither.

1. Perhaps indirectly in that people get their insurance mostly through employers. |
|
If they have employment which offers healthcare, I suppose then that they have a policy.
On the other hand if it was obtained under fraudulent terms (faking your identity for instance) then the insurance companies could easily deny payment when the time comes to use it if they get wise to the real nature of the insured.

2. Undocumented workers, for the most part, don't work the kinds of jobs |
|
that include health care benefits. A few are unionized, but not most. Mostly, they go to emergency rooms.

5. This is true but given a population estimated at 12 million |
|
there are at least SOME who work in jobs where they have such policies. It may be a very small minority but I'm sure the number isn't zero.

4. They are not "illegals" for fuck's sake. |
|
They are human beings and you diminish them by referring to them as "illegals". And do you know that these undocumented workers pay taxes for which they won't benefit? Specifically, social security & medical taxes.

I am aware of their contributions to our economy. My point is to counter the Looney toones that scream about abortions and (undocumented workers) getting benefits from Uncle Sam. It should be pointed out to THEM that the insurance industry has no morals and will do anything for $. On the other hand, the government is responsible to the voters and their concerns. They need to stop worrying about how their tax dollars are spent and worry more about how their insurance premiums are spent.

13. Thank you, safeinOhio! |

You do have a good point, though I'd be reluctant to use it lest we give the rightwing yet another tool to bash undocumented workers.

Insurance companies do not require proof of legal residency to rip you off.

12. I've never been asked about my citizenship or residency status |
|
on an insurance application so that might not fly. What they would like is that someone who is not here legally is going to want to keep a low profile and probably won't complain when claims are not paid.

15. It doesn't. There is no citizenship requirement for entering into an insurance contract. |

I mean lots of non-citizens are here legally in the US. Many work jobs that give health benefits. Would we require people prove to private insurance companies that you're in the USA legally in order to buy private insurance from them? Would we want to give that kind of information to the private insurance companies? I'd vote no to that. More to the point, I want people to have the ability to get insurance if there here legally or not because them not having insurance costs me more anyways in the end.
