Lemonade Days raise funds for the treatment of pediatric cancer

Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) is a charity that raises funds for pediatric cancer research. This weekend June 12 -14 is their 6th Annual "Lemonade Days", an event in which volunteers across the country set up lemonade stands to raise money for the treatment of pediatric cancer. ALSF has raised over $25 million toward pediatric cancer research and hopes to raise another $1 million this weekend.

Lemonade Days began when pediatric cancer patient Alexandra "Alex" Scott was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer, just prior to her first birthday. Her determination is inspiring as she not only beat the cancer against the odds but taught herself to walk. Unfortunately, the cancer returned and she passed away in August 2004. Her dream before leaving the hospital was to set up a lemonade stand. Before passing away at the age of eight, Alex had set up lemonade stands and raised over $1 million for the treatment of pediatric cancer.

Lemonade Days offer an opportunity for parents to teach young children the values of service, philanthropy and charity. Setting up a lemonade stand with the kids is also a way of teaching commerce, entrepreneurship and basic math. All these lessons are wrapped in a simple, fun symbolic childhood gesture -- the lemonade stand. Moreover, parents can plant the seeds of gratitude for the basics of life and health. What child can resist the opportunity to raise money for other kids? Using simple, not frightening language to discuss the cause, parents can raise their young children's awareness and inspire them to take action.

Hey kids, can you raise money for the care of the sick, cause we adults can't. It might upset some folks to help save the lives of others.
