Obama's Magic Wand
Many DUers are disappointed with Obama's health care reform.
He started with compromise. He got sidetracked with boneheaded issues (Obama, the cop, the professor and the beer). He compromised more. He let Republicans frame the issue (Notice his speech last night -- "the left," "tort reform," "consumers," "markets decide," "competition,"). He's giving everything away before he even gets to the table.

And many of us are pissed off.

Oh, the Will Pitts of the word will log on to DU and call us the "permantly annouyed," or whatever. And his legions of Obama apologists will follow, asking us if we expect Obama to "wave his magic wand," and create real health care reform.

The answer, of course, is yes.
After all, we gave Obama his magic wand last November when we elected him, a majority in the House, and a majority in the Senate.
Wave the magic wand and make it happen, Democrats.

It's obscene that Obama stood at the podium last night, sucking up to the Republicans as if they controlled this issue.

It's time to fight back, after 8 years of Buscho, 8 years of ProCorporate Clinton, and 12 years of Reagan-Bush.

We need someone to draw a line in the sand. As Edwards said, you can't "nice these people to death." They are not going to voluntarily negotiate away their power.

Especially not to a President so fucking eager to compromise.

I am not advocating that we be rude to Republicans, or engage in vile Republican tactics.

But I am demanding that Democratic politicians FIGHT for Democratic values.

The health care plan Obama offered last night is NOT the best the Democratic Party can offer.

A taxpayer-backed public option is the BARE MINIMUM. Anything less, and I won't support it.

13. "Don't you have some poor people to beat up?" Thank you.
Now I don't have to bother to insult you. Nothing I could say could possibly be as effective as your own comment.

4. While I agree with you, no need to be too rough on DU'ers.
I do not like the bill but I won't get angry with those that support it except the lawmakers. We will have to build a movement for a bill that starts with the best interests of the people as its focus and then corporate considerations following instead of the other way around. We got insurance reform for the private for profit insurance industry with consumer protections. While this won't fix the underlying cost problems which will be masked with subsidies, maybe it can be a stop gap instead of an end game.

Obama could be banging everyone man and woman aged 18 and older, and if fought for what I think are Democratic values, I'd support him whole-heartedly.

You could easily substitute "Healthcare" for "Gay People" in the title of this piece.

you should take part in one of his threads.
