It's the lying that matters

............Wilson's worse sin was that he lied, and too many people (many of them in the media) are forgetting that.

As a refresher, President Obama said:

There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false – the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.

Congressman Wilson, take note: President Obama was correct. You were wrong, as the actual legislative language of HR 3200 makes clear.

Page 143 for those keeping score at home, Lines 3 to 7:

***** SEC. 246. NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS.

Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.

5. It was shocking. And everyone knew it.
That is shown by how rapidly, and futilely, Wilson issued apologies.

10. I don't know...who pays?
Are you implying that the president is in fact lying? He states that under this reform they will not be eligible. I don't think the reform applies to the emergency rooms. Here is a link to info on the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (established in 1986) that required hospitals and ambulances to provide care to anyone requiring emergency services (including illegals) regardless of their ability to pay. Oh and BTW it is in the house version of the bill that in order to be eligible to receive the public Option, one must provide a copy of their tax return.

4. Papers, bitte!
"They" claim it's because Republicans wanted to add some amendment about ID's. I think they're still trying to get National ID's pushed through anyway they can.

"Papers? Papers, bitte!"

9. That was my first thought - are we going to have to carry a passport or birth certificate
To the emergency room for treatment? If we don't have them with us, will we be thrown out on the street to die?

Such a wonderful, generous, totally Christian country the Republicans want!

6. It shouldn't be that way -- but politics says that it must be that way.
Yet the yahoos claim that proponents of reform would be so stupid as to not to recognize this fact.

Of course, meanwhile 12 million or so humans will continue to be denied adequate access to health services. And this will hurt all, whether because of higher costs of emergency care as a result of failure to treat elsewhere and/or prevent complications requiring emergency care, or when a pandemic hits -- and doesn't respect legal lines but will pass freely between illegal and legal residents.

8. THIS is why Wilson's apology isn't sufficient
He owes Obama an apology for being a jackass.

But he brought disrepute to the House of Representatives and, when you get right down to it, his outburst was essentially yet another lie to the American people.

Censure.
