Saying "President Rahm Emanuel" When Referring To Obama Seems Highly Inflammatory
Edited on Thu Sep-10-09 02:33 PM by KittyWampus
At least to me.

There's some stuff implicit in that remark that seems really unsavory. Whether the people saying it (Sirota and some DU'ers) consciously intend for it to go there or not.

Sort of like when that cartoonist had a cop shooting an ape and the cops in the cartoon saying someone else should right the Stimulus Bill.

The cartoonist might not have intended for viewers to read Obama into that ape, but the inference was there none the less.

6. I think he just wants to grab attention. Sprinkled with a bit of frustration at pace of progress.

11. All the hyperbole really gets on my nerves. This is another case of it.
All I want is rational discussion, not this endless crazy exaggeration.

7. But we did it all the time re: Cheney and **. So while it may be
offensive (and far less realistic) than what we said under **, I can see why some people still feel that way with the new Admin. It can be frustrating to feel like your president isn't necessarily calling the shots.

9. I have too much hope. I can't bring myself to completely believe Obama is responsible.
Edited on Thu Sep-10-09 03:02 PM by Laelth
I know that he is responsible, ultimately. He's plenty smart. That's not the issue. The problem is that I, and many like me, still want to have some faith in him. We want to believe that we cast a good vote (for Obama over Hillary or another primary candidate). We don't want to believe that Obama is selling us out.

Thus, it's tempting to blame Emanuel. Personally, I have never referred to Emanuel as the President, but I can certainly see why some would. The reason is not so sinister as you may think, and it's not an insult, either. It's an attempt to hold on to hope despite evidence that our situation seems hopeless.

10. Seems similar to the wingnuts, who are claiming Obama is "Nancy Pelosi's Puppet"
There seems to be a real impulse to demonize and diminish Obama, I don't like it.

12. Why because Rham is jewish??
Saying Obama is controlled by Rham could be construed as anti semitic.

13. (shrug) Of course it is. All such things anti-Obama are perfectly ok here....

As long as you coat it with merely the absolute thinnest possible veneer of "patriotic dissent", it all flies.
