Report: Deputy let Disney guard stun another with Taser (Florida)
10:21 p.m. EDT, September 10, 2009

An Orange County deputy is being investigated after he let a Walt Disney World guard stun another guard with his Taser last week, a television station's Web site is reporting.

Deputy Eric Jaros remains on duty, according to WFTV.com.

The Sheriff's Office has launched an internal investigation.

"The deputy was working a law enforcement function, but it was an off-duty detail," sheriff's Capt. Angelo Nieves told WFTV-Channel 9.

Taser has built an arsenal of weapons that are meant to save lives, by giving police officers the ability to subdue resistant suspects without shooting or bludgeoning them. But since their inception, the less-lethal weapons have drawn criticism.

Reports of minivan moms and mouthy grandmothers getting jolts from the devices still make headlines. And occasionally, people die within hours of being incapacitated. Such was the case with Robert Dziekanski, a Polish immigrant who died after getting several jolts from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at Vancouver International Airport.

Despite those incidents, the company continuously develops new models, and each is a bit more powerful than its predecessor. Taser claims its products have been used on humans nearly 1.4 million times, and that they do not cause damage to the heart, or change its rhythm.

2. 6News: State Police Oppose 'Liability' Of Issuing Tasers (Indianapolis)
Indiana Troopers Aren't Issued Tasers

UPDATED: 7:34 pm EDT September 10, 2009

INDIANAPOLIS -- Despite a recent string of violent attacks on Indiana State Police troopers, the agency said outfitting its force with Tasers would be too much of a liability.

<snip>

ISP does provide its SWAT officers with Tasers, but not all troopers. Sgt. Dave Bursten said the device is just another weapon that could be turned against them in an altercation.

"We don't feel that that's one more piece of liability we need to bring to everybody on the department," he said.
