Watching CNN try to cover their ass...
Over this whole Coast Guard thing is hilarious.

Bottom line: they went to air after hearing something on their scanner without confirming it.

"Ha, ha. Well it is 9/11 after all and we all have terrorism on the brain."

"Ha, ha. Well, really it's the Coast Guard's fault because they shouldn't conduct their daily training exercises on this day."

"Ha, ha. Well, really, this is just a great TEACHABLE MOMENT for everyone."

I'm curious to hear what Ms. Indignant former Bush DHS official thinks about CNN's admission, considering she spent the entire morning trying to frame this as the fault of the Obama administration.

They actually went to air reporting "shots fired" after hearing someone say "bang, bang, bang..." over the radio.

This is our media, folks.

Pathetic, ain't it?

3. I keep repeating this on all the threads, but it's Journalism 101 to NOT REPORT FROM THE SCANNER. It
takes 30 seconds to make a phone call. TV ignores this all the time, and this is what happens; they look like complete dumbasses.

5. I watched th entire
half hour or so of blatant speculation. Fran Toonsend blathering on, then expressing outrage over the possiblity that it was a training exercise blaming Janet Napolitano for the fiasco. What bullshit.

FOX was covering it too.

So the Coast Guard is supposed to stop all activity 9/11 just to keep the media from going nuts?

6. Now they're demanding a CG press conference.
What, to describe how the media fucked up by reporting from a scanner without getting confirmation?

10. i don't see how it's the coast guard's fault that CNN couldn't be bothered to
check something out before reporting it.

13. I hope th CG reads the riot act to the media over this
This wasn't the reporting of anything factual. It was pure speculation. Even when CNN caled the CG and was told they didn't know what CNN was talking about, it didn't stop them from continuing with the nonsense.

What happened to having 2 reliabe sources before reporting?

16. 2 sources: radio scanner and a traffic cam.
They had all the sources they needed to fill the airwaves.

As for providing actual information? Well, CNN got out of that business long ago (and FoxNews was never in it).

8. what do you expect to happen when instead of REPORTING you just do what anyone can do...
that gossips do every day... jsut tell everyone something you heard without getting the facts. that's what the media has become. Once upon a time, someone would get a lead for a story, or get a statement from someone, and then go check it out and find out if it is true and then see what other information they could find and then do a story that gives all the facts and information. Nowadays, everyone wants to be the first, so they just report something as if it were fact without even bothering to check it out. It's like the breaking news where they will show video of someplace.. like a school... and there is NOTHING there... and they will say they don't know what's going on but somehow it should still be breaking news.... and then it turns out to be nothing. uggh.

17.  I tuned in when some officer of some sort.....

was REALLY ticked off about how unconscionable it was for the Coast Guard to have such a training exercise and not inform others.

I guess he was assuming many of the things CNN said were factual.

Like someone saying "bang, bang, bang" actually being shots fired.

Oy again.

25. I hope this BLOWS UP across all the media.......

The way they distort nearly everything in their infotainment business model, trying to fill airtime 24/7.

Someone should do a Facebook poll for it to go viral and have it be stupid like the "news" daily polls which are often beyond silly.

Where oh where are our investigative journalists????

15. Poor babies.
They wanted a drama so badly they weren't going to let a little common sense and fact checking stand in the way of the story.

I wasn't even aware they'd done this until I logged onto DU. I don't watch CNN anymore. They've proven themselves to be irrelevant when it comes to actual news too many times in the past. This event just cements my feelings even more.
