I just wish I had the populist Obama I voted for, instead of the corporatist Obama we ended up with.

2. He was never a populist. Never. |
|
The only populist running in the primaries, for whom I voted btw, is now fighting a paternity suit. So, this is probably better. But still, not a populist.

16. He existed in your head |

Though, Obama's flowery rhetoric did help feed that delusion. He was always a bit of a Rorschach, and I can't help but feel that was done intentionally on his behalf (perhaps that makes him a genius politician). But never did he really explicitly come off as a progressive, much less a liberal. Implicitly, I do feel he help feed an illusion in the masses with his repeated campaign motifs. I saw, and was amongst, a crowd of over 60,000 people clamoring in unison to catch a view of this man--and they did not show up for a centrist politician. Obama didn't necessarily fool them; they fooled themselves (with a little help).

I had no illusions that we were electing a liberal. I did think, however, that we were electing someone who might do things he explicitly promised to do. For example, it doesn't take a huge leap of faith to think that when a candidate says that he will hire no lobbyists to work in his administration, he will actually not hire lobbyists to work in his administration. What I didn't expect is that he would sign an executive order that gives the appearance of banning lobbyists but includes a cynical waiver so that the president can hire as many lobbyists as he wants.
I knew we weren't getting a liberal. What I didn't expect is that we were electing another con artist.

19. Look, thats what a "third way" centrist does |
|
They attempt to appease both the people and business, without necessarily giving a weighted preference to either segment. Thats just the way it is.
Obama really has not surprised me. I don't criticize him because I feel deceived (he was merely electioneering as all candidates do--such is politics). I criticize to inform others that there is an alternative between the center and the fringe right.

7. The choice wasn't between Bush and Obama. |
|
It was Bush and McCain which is still the same as saying No choice.
And we are all being circumspect in not whining over the primary choices we passed up.

9. Yup--he is SUCH an improvement on Bush that all the things he has done |
|
or not done which disappoint me shrink down to nits in comparison.
When I get all bent out of shape, my husband straightens me out with a simple: "Better than Bush!"
It works just fine.
Go O!!!
