While the media plays on prejudices, corporate money makes end run into politics.
IMO, Mr. Obama was selected to be president by corporate money to take the fall for the imploding economy, and thus divide democrats and the country by manipulating the media, when necessary, to play on emotions and prejudices to the advantage of corporatists in office and in future elections.

There was a picture of Senator Obama in the corner on the front page of the Financial Times (who have a distinct proclivity for puns and double meanings) on the day after the 2006 US elections with the caption, "The race in on."

I think that President Obama surprised many septics with his broad public support and powers of speech in ameliorating the financial crisis, but even then, the attacks were starting. Now that his opponents see some weakness in his health care advocacy, they are letting loose big-time, prime-time with the media slime and disrespect. America is diverse and already divided and it doesn't take much to trigger emotionalism and the fights amongst ourselves.

And the winner of these divisive political battles: corporations, and thus business-military empire. The focus of getting out of military misadventures and limiting corporate power in government takes a back seat. And the back seat drivers put it in gear when we are not looking, and attempt to take over the election process by a supreme court ruling that corporations have the astonishing right to overtly buy and sell elections. Snip, the illusion of democratic power of the people.

I am hopeful and enthusiastic of America's election of a president who gives hope and inspiration to much of the world's population, and to the election of a intelligent and caring president that would allow the nation to educate itself and move on to a responsible and enlightened society. But I am ashamed of the vulnerability of ignorant and intolerant people that allow themselves to be manipulated into hatred and fear responses. The dysfunctional media is the key that the democrats are failing to return to the public trust.
