Sotomayor will add value, chief justice says
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts said Friday it's vital he and new Justice Sonia Sotomayor get along well because they could spend the next quarter century working together in close quarters.

"She's going to be a delightful, wonderful colleague," Roberts, nominated to the court by President George W. Bush, said of President Barack Obama's first Supreme Court appointee. "We're going to be working together closely, who knows, for 25 years."

A sometimes wisecracking Roberts let the University of Michigan's law dean and about a dozen students and others put a wide range of questions to him during an on-stage discussion. Later, he attended a groundbreaking for a new classroom building.

Roberts said Sotomayor's long experience as a trial judge will aid the high court.

"She'll be able to contribute in ways that most of us can't," he said.

3. Oh, look, he's trying to say nice things about the woman.
It's a pity his statements are so peculiarly awkward. There are many things I hope for in a Supreme Court Justice but "delightful" is not one of them. That's what a courtesan has to be. It's a courtesan who has to "get along" with the men she's with. A Justice of the Supreme Court does not.

A Justice has to hear and render opinions. Charm is not a requirement no matter how many years the relationship lasts.

4. Didn't Roberts faint while working on his roof or something?
Why should he suppose that they will both be working together for 25 years?

5. The thought that Roberts might be the last chief justice I ever see is deeply disturbing.
This may be terrible, but I am in favor of http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/5/26/735766/-Fat-Tony:Activist-Judge">buying Fat Tony greasy hamburgers with lots and lots and lots and lots of extra cheese and bacon.

It could have been worse. Fat Tony felt he deserved the Chief Justice seat.
